Tie Length Calculator — necktie length, knot and fabric

Work out how long a necktie needs to be for a given neck, drop and knot — and how much bias-cut fabric it takes to make one.

Used only to sanity-check the drop below. Height is a poor predictor on its own, because torso length varies independently of it.
The number on the shirt collar. In inches, multiply by 2.54 — a 15.5 collar is about 39.4 cm. Every wrap the knot makes consumes roughly one of these.
Measure it: from the base of the collar at the front, down to the middle of the belt buckle. This is where the tip of the blade should finish, and it is the input that decides the answer.
A knot consumes tie in proportion to how many times it passes around the neck. That is why a Windsor on a standard tie can leave the blade sitting embarrassingly high.
The narrow rear tail normally finishes a little above the blade so it stays hidden in the keeper loop.
For making rather than buying. Necktie shells are cut on the true bias at 45 degrees, which is what gives a tie its drape and its ability to recover its shape.

The tie length calculator above answers two related questions. What This Tie Length Calculator Does

It builds the length from its parts rather than scaling a standard figure. A necktie has to go once around the neck, then be consumed by however many passes the knot makes, then reach down the front to the belt, then have a tail long enough to sit in the keeper loop. Adding those four gives the length, and each is either measured or chosen rather than assumed.

The grid converts the answer to inches, isolates how much length the chosen knot eats, and — for anyone making a tie — gives the bias fabric length and the minimum fabric width the pieces need. The note flags whether the result falls inside the range of ties usually sold or pushes into extra-long territory.

How to Use It

  1. Measure the front drop rather than estimating it. From the base of the collar at the front, straight down to the middle of the belt buckle, wearing the trousers where you actually wear them.
  2. Enter the collar size from a shirt that fits. If your shirts are sized in inches, multiply by 2.54.
  3. Pick the knot you genuinely tie, not the one you mean to learn. This changes the answer by several centimetres.
  4. Read the length. If you are buying, compare it against the length printed on the tie or listed by the seller.
  5. If you are making one, set your fabric width and wastage and read the bias fabric length and minimum width.

The Formula and How It Is Calculated

Four terms, added:

Length = neck wrap + knot allowance + front drop + tail

where the neck wrap is one collar circumference, the knot allowance is a multiple of that circumference set by how many passes the knot makes, and the tail is the front drop less a small amount so it finishes above the blade.

Work through the defaults. A 40 cm collar contributes 40 cm of neck wrap. A half-Windsor at a factor of 0.65 consumes 0.65 × 40 = 26 cm. A front drop of 46 cm and a tail 5 cm shorter at 41 cm complete the sum: 40 + 26 + 46 + 41 = 153 cm, which is 60.24 inches.

Change nothing but the knot and watch the answer move. A four-in-hand at 0.45 consumes 18 cm, giving 145 cm — about 57 inches, squarely within the range of ordinary ties. A full Windsor at 0.90 consumes 36 cm, giving 163 cm, or 64 inches, which is extra-long territory. That 18 cm spread on one neck, from knot choice alone, is why the same tie sits perfectly with one knot and four inches high with another.

For making, the shell is cut on the true bias. A piece cut at 45 degrees projects its own length divided by the square root of two onto each axis of the fabric, so 153 ÷ 1.414 = 108.2 cm of fabric length, and with 15 per cent wastage 124.4 cm. The longest single piece of a three-piece tie is roughly 45 per cent of the total, so the fabric has to be at least 0.45 × 153 ÷ 1.414 = 48.7 cm wide for that piece to fit on the bias at all.

Why the Knot Is the Term That Surprises People

Almost everyone treats tie length as a property of the tie and the wearer. It is really a property of the tie, the wearer and the knot, and the third term is the one that changes day to day.

The mechanism is simple once stated. Every pass a knot makes around the neck consumes roughly one neck circumference of material out of the working end. A four-in-hand makes a single pass; a Windsor makes two, one to each side. On a 40 cm collar that difference alone is most of the 18 cm gap in the worked example, and 18 cm is the difference between a blade at the belt and a blade at the sternum.

The same effect explains two other familiar complaints. A larger collar amplifies everything, so a man with a 44 cm neck tying a Windsor needs a genuinely long tie, while the same knot on a 36 cm neck is unremarkable. And thicker cloth or a heavier interlining makes a knot bulkier, which consumes a little more length again — a factor this arithmetic does not model, and one reason to treat the output as a target rather than a specification.

Knots themselves have been treated formally. Fink and Mao’s work in the late 1990s mapped tie knots onto walks on a triangular lattice and enumerated 85 tieable with a conventional necktie; a later analysis by Hirsch, Markström, Patterson, Sandberg and Vejdemo-Johansson relaxed one of their assumptions and found a much larger space, published as More ties than we thought. The knot types themselves have since been classified mathematically in The Mathematics of Tie Knots by Denne, Joireman and Young. None of that changes the arithmetic here, but it does make the point that the passes a knot makes are a countable structural property rather than a matter of taste.

Where the Tip Should Finish, and Why Answers Differ

The convention this page uses is that the tip of the blade meets the middle of the belt buckle. It is the most widely stated one and it is a reasonable default, but it is a convention rather than a law, and two things move it.

The first is where the trousers sit. A higher rise puts the belt higher and shortens the required drop; a lower rise lengthens it. Measuring the drop while wearing the trousers you will actually wear removes this problem entirely, which is why the field asks for a measurement rather than deriving one from height.

The second is that height is a weak proxy for torso length. Two people of the same height can differ by several centimetres in collar-to-belt distance, and it is the torso that the tie has to cross. That is why the height field here only sanity-checks the drop instead of driving the result — a drop wildly out of proportion to height usually means the measurement was taken to the wrong place.

Style preferences shift it further. Some prefer the tip an inch above the buckle, some at the waistband; the modern narrow tie is often worn slightly shorter. All of that is accommodated by changing the drop you enter, which is the honest place for a preference to live.

Buying Against the Number, and Making Against It

Ties are typically sold in a standard length with a longer option, and manufacturers differ about what those mean, so the length printed on the tie is worth more than the label. If your calculated length is a few centimetres above a standard tie, a smaller knot usually resolves it before a different tie does — switching from a half-Windsor to a four-in-hand buys back roughly a fifth of a collar circumference.

If the number lands well above the standard range, an extra-long tie is the right answer and shortening the knot is a workaround. Going the other way, a tie that is too long cannot be fixed by knot choice alone without the tail hanging below the blade, which is the giveaway.

For making, three points matter beyond the arithmetic. The bias cut is not decorative — it is what lets the tie stretch and recover, and a tie cut on the straight grain will twist and never hang properly. Interlining is a separate material with its own quantity, cut on the bias as well, and it does more to determine how a knot behaves than the shell does. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Deriving the drop from height. Torso length varies independently of height. Measure collar seam to belt buckle instead.
  • Ignoring the knot. A Windsor consumes roughly twice the length of a four-in-hand. The same tie can be correct with one and far too short with the other.
  • Measuring in the wrong trousers. Rise height moves the belt, and the belt is where the blade is supposed to finish. Measure in what you will wear.
  • Trusting the size label over the printed length. Standard and long mean different things between makers. The stated length in centimetres or inches is the comparable figure.
  • Cutting a tie on the straight grain. The bias cut is structural, not stylistic. A tie cut on grain will twist and will not recover its shape.
