It is unit arithmetic on a frequency, and it applies equally to a firearm figure quoted in a reference book, an airsoft or paintball marker, a film armourer timing a sequence, or a game designer balancing a weapon.

Almost every quick mental calculation gets that wrong, and at high rates the error is large enough to matter.
What This Rounds Per Minute Calculator Does
Cyclic rate is defined as the maximum rate at which the action can complete a firing cycle, measured with no allowance for heat, feeding problems or reloading — the standard treatment of rate of fire separates it from the sustained rate for exactly that reason. The calculator therefore reports both. Cyclic figures feed the per-second and per-interval outputs; the sustained figure divides total rounds by total elapsed time including the reload gap.
It also lets you switch timing convention. Counting gaps puts the first round at time zero, so n rounds occupy n − 1 intervals. Counting rounds gives every round a full interval, which is what dividing capacity by rate produces. Both are shown because the second is what most published quick answers use, and seeing the difference is the point.
How to Use It
- Enter the cyclic rate in rounds per minute. If you only have rounds per second, multiply by 60 first.
- Enter the magazine or belt capacity, and the burst length you want timed.
- Enter the reload or feed gap. Set it to zero if you only want the cyclic figures.
- Set the time window if you want a round count over a fixed period with reloads included.
- Compare the two timing conventions. The gap between them is roughly one interval per magazine, which is small at 800 rpm and large at 60 rpm.
The Formula and How It Is Calculated
The base conversions are direct. Rounds per second = rounds per minute / 60, and interval between rounds = 60 / rounds per minute seconds.
Work the defaults. At 800 rounds per minute, that is 800 / 60 = 13.333 rounds per second, and 60 / 800 = 0.075 seconds, or 75 milliseconds, between each round.
A burst of b rounds starting at time zero lasts (b − 1) intervals. Three rounds at 75 ms is 2 × 0.075 = 0.150 seconds. A thirty round magazine is 29 × 0.075 = 2.175 seconds. The naive division, 30 / 13.333, gives 2.25 seconds — 75 milliseconds too long, because it charges an interval to a round that has nothing after it.
The sustained rate divides rounds by the whole cycle. One magazine of 30 takes 2.175 seconds to empty and 2.5 seconds to replace, a total of 4.675 seconds, so the sustained rate is 30 / 4.675 = 6.417 rounds per second, or 385 rounds per minute. That is 48% of the cyclic figure, from a reload gap slightly longer than the magazine itself.
Rounds in a fixed window are counted by stepping through the cycle rather than by multiplying. In 10 seconds at these figures, the first magazine finishes at 2.175 s, the second at 6.850 s, and the third starts at 9.350 s with 0.65 s left, which fits 9 more rounds. The total is 69 rounds, not the 64 that multiplying the sustained rate by 10 would suggest, because the window ends mid-magazine rather than mid-reload.
Why the Off-by-One Matters
At 800 rounds per minute an interval is 75 milliseconds, so the difference between the two conventions on a thirty round magazine is 3.3% of the dump time. That is inside the noise of most measurements and can be ignored.
At low rates it stops being ignorable. A bolt action rifle at 12 aimed rounds per minute has a five second interval; five rounds take 20 seconds by the gaps convention and 25 by the rounds convention, a 25% difference. A mortar at 4 rounds per minute is worse still. The rule of thumb is that the error is one interval per group, so it matters whenever the group is short relative to the rate.

Cyclic Rate Is Not What Comes Out
Cyclic rate is a laboratory figure. Four things pull real output below it, and none of them are in this calculation.
The first is reloading, which is the only one the tool models, and on its own it typically halves the figure. The second is heat: sustained fire raises barrel and chamber temperature, and published sustained rates for belt-fed weapons exist mainly to keep barrels within limits, not because the mechanism cannot cycle faster. The third is ammunition supply — a rate that empties a magazine in two seconds consumes an entire load-out in under a minute, which is a logistics figure rather than a performance one. The fourth is the human: aiming, recoil recovery and target transitions dominate practical rates far more than the mechanism does.
There is also variation in the mechanism itself. Cyclic rate changes with ammunition pressure, temperature, lubrication, spring wear and buffer weight, so a published figure is a nominal value with a spread around it rather than a constant. If precision matters, time a known count and divide.
Measuring a Cyclic Rate Yourself
The reliable method is to count rounds and measure elapsed time between the first and last, then divide by the number of gaps. If ten rounds span 0.675 seconds from first to last, that is nine gaps of 0.075 seconds, so 800 rounds per minute. Dividing by ten instead of nine would give 889 — an 11% overstatement from a single miscount, which is why the convention has to be stated.

- Dividing capacity by rate for the dump time. That charges an interval to the last round. Use one fewer gap than rounds.
- Quoting cyclic rate as sustained rate. Once reloading and cooling are counted, real output is commonly half the cyclic figure or less.
- Multiplying a sustained rate by a short window. Whether the window ends mid-magazine or mid-reload changes the count materially over a few seconds.
- Treating a published cyclic figure as exact. It varies with ammunition, temperature, wear and lubrication, and is a nominal value with a spread.
- Mixing per-second and per-minute inputs. A figure of 13.3 entered as rounds per minute rather than per second is out by a factor of sixty.
