This hot tub cost calculator assembles an annual running cost from five separate items: the energy to heat fresh water, the energy to hold temperature, the electricity the filtration pump uses, chemicals, and the water itself. Every price, tariff and consumption figure is one you enter. The page publishes none of its own, because energy prices, water charges and tub efficiency vary enormously between countries, suppliers and models, and a page quoting a figure would be wrong for almost everybody reading it.
What it can do properly is the arithmetic and the structure. Most people underestimate hot tub running costs because they think about the heat-up and forget that the tub spends every hour of the year losing heat and being reheated. Arb Digital built this page so that the standby item is visible, separate, and impossible to skip past.
What This Calculator Does
It computes the energy needed to bring each fresh fill from your mains temperature to your set temperature, multiplies that by how often you refill, and prices it at your electricity rate. It prices your standby loss and your pump runtime at the same rate. It adds chemicals and water charges. Then it divides the total by how often you actually use the tub, which is usually the number that changes how people feel about the result.
The breakdown bars matter more than the headline. A tub used four times a week with a modest standby loss and one used once a month with the same standby loss cost almost the same to run, because standby has nothing to do with usage. Seeing the split is how you work out which lever is worth pulling.
How to Use It
- Take the electricity price from your bill, including standing charges spread across your usage if you want the fully loaded figure.
- Measure the standby loss if you can. A week on a dedicated meter with the tub idle gives you the real number instead of a guess.
- Check the pump schedule in the tub’s control panel rather than assuming; filtration cycles are often longer than owners think.
- Use a realistic refill count. Water is usually a small item, but the energy to reheat a full fill is not.
- Enter how often you genuinely use it, not how often you intended to, and read the cost per use.
How Each Item Is Calculated
The heat-up energy is the standard specific heat relation, Q = m · c · ΔT, described in the HyperPhysics note on specific heat, which gives the specific heat of water as 4.186 joules per gram per degree Celsius. Treating water as one kilogram per litre, the energy in kilowatt-hours for a volume V litres raised by ΔT degrees Celsius is V × 4.186 × ΔT ÷ 3,600.
Standby is taken directly as the kilowatt-hours per day you enter, multiplied by 365. Filtration is watts times hours divided by 1,000, multiplied by 365. Chemicals are the monthly figure times twelve. Water is the volume of each refill, times refills per year, priced at your rate per thousand units.
Worked example with the metric defaults, which you can follow on paper. A 1,500 litre tub heated from 15 °C to 38 °C is a 23 degree rise: 1,500 × 4.186 × 23 ÷ 3,600 = 40.12 kWh per fill, and at two fills a year that is 80.23 kWh. Standby at 4 kWh a day is 1,460 kWh. A 1,500 watt pump for 4 hours a day is 6 kWh a day, or 2,190 kWh. The total is 3,730.23 kWh, which at 0.17 per kWh is 634.14. Chemicals at 25 a month add 300, and 3,000 litres of refill water at 4.00 per thousand litres adds 12, for a total of 946.14 a year. Across four uses a week — 208 uses — that is 4.55 each.
Notice the shape of that result: standby and filtration are 98 per cent of the electricity, and the heat-up everybody worries about is 2 per cent. That is the finding this page exists to make visible.
Why the Standby Figure Dominates Everything
A hot tub holds a large mass of water twenty or thirty degrees above ambient, outdoors, all year. Heat leaves continuously through the shell, the plumbing, the cabinet and above all the surface, and the heater replaces it. Nothing about that depends on whether anybody gets in.
The cover is the biggest single influence, because an uncovered water surface loses heat by evaporation at a rate that dwarfs conduction. A cover that has absorbed water is heavy, poorly insulating and worth replacing; a cover that does not seal at the edges leaks heat continuously. Ambient temperature matters just as much, which is why the same tub costs far more to run in January than in July, and why an annual average from a summer week of measurement will understate the year.
Set temperature matters because the loss is roughly proportional to the difference between the water and the air. Dropping the set point a couple of degrees reduces that difference and therefore the standing loss, every hour, all year. The Costs This Page Does Not Include
Purchase, delivery, electrical installation and the base or decking the tub sits on are capital costs, not running costs, and none of them appear here. Neither does depreciation, which on a hot tub is substantial.
Maintenance and repair are excluded too, and they are not small. Pumps, heaters, control boards and covers all fail eventually, and a heater element or a circulation pump replacement can cost more than a year of electricity. Filters need replacing on a schedule. If you use a service company for openings, closings or winterisation, add that separately.
Insurance and property considerations sit outside as well: some policies treat a hot tub differently, and a large volume of water on a deck or a roof terrace is a structural question. Water Chemistry Costs Money and Is Not Optional
The chemicals line is small in cash terms and important in every other way. Hot water at body temperature is an excellent environment for bacteria, and a hot tub that is not properly disinfected is a genuine health hazard rather than merely an unpleasant one. The CDC guidance on home pool and hot tub water treatment and testing sets out the disinfectant and pH ranges to maintain and how often to test, and notes specifically that cyanuric acid products are not recommended in hot tubs.
Practically, chemical cost scales with how heavily the tub is used rather than with its size, because bather load is what consumes disinfectant. A tub used daily by several people will get through noticeably more than the same tub used occasionally, which is one of the few items on this page that does track usage. - Budgeting only for the heat-up. On the worked example it is two per cent of the electricity. Standby and filtration are the rest.
- Guessing the standby figure. It varies by a factor of several between tubs and seasons, and it is the item you can actually measure.
- Measuring in summer and annualising it. Loss tracks the gap between water and air, so a warm-weather reading understates the year badly.
- Forgetting the filtration schedule. A large pump running several hours a day is a major line item that owners rarely check.
- Treating it as a running cost problem only. Repairs, filters, depreciation and installation are real and are deliberately outside this calculation.
