Paragraph one: certification area and level

Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.

Paragraph two: one thing students achieved

Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.

What this field is judging behind the words

International recruitment runs on its own calendar, with many posts filled between October and February through fairs and agency databases, well before domestic hiring opens. Heads screen for curriculum fit first, then visa eligibility, since host-country rules on nationality and qualifications genuinely limit who can be employed. Video interviews cover pastoral duty, co-curricular contribution and safeguarding in depth.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost international school teacher candidates

• Sending a one-page US-style resume when the school expects a photo CV with nationality and date of birth
• Naming a home-country licence but never saying which curriculum you can actually deliver
• Leaving out co-curricular and pastoral duties that most international contracts require

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

Most reputable international schools ask for a home-country teaching qualification such as QTS or a state licence plus two years of experience, but they are private institutions and no single standard applies. Curriculum-specific training matters more day to day: IB workshop categories and the IB Educator Certificate, or Cambridge professional development for IGCSE and A Level. Requirements vary by school and host country.

Classroom teacher to subject or key stage leader, then head of faculty and onward to deputy or principal roles. Moving schools every two to four years is normal and is how most people advance here.
