Adapting this for a professor application

Paragraph one: certification area and level

Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.

Paragraph two: one thing students achieved

Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Academic hiring runs on a long annual cycle with search committees, a job talk, teaching demonstrations and campus visits spread over months. Research universities weight publications and grant funding; teaching-focused institutions weight pedagogy and service. The application package — cover letter, research statement, teaching statement, curriculum vitae — matters more than a resume, and the resume version is used mainly for adjunct and administrative applications.

Mistakes that cost professor candidates

• Submitting a two page resume when the search committee expects a full curriculum vitae with a complete publication list
• Listing publications without venue, year and authorship position, which committees read closely
• Sending an identical file to research intensive and teaching focused institutions, when each weights the sections differently

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

A doctorate in the field is the standard requirement for tenure-track positions, with a master's sufficient for some community college and adjunct roles. Accreditation requirements govern who may teach what, particularly in professional programmes.
