Adapting this for a school counselor application
Paragraph one: certification area and level
Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.
Paragraph two: one thing students achieved
Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real β a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves β and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
What this field is judging behind the words
District hiring for counsellors is certification-gated and interview-heavy, usually with a panel including administrators. Expect questions on crisis response, mandated reporting, college and career readiness, and how you would run a comprehensive programme rather than react to referrals. Caseload ratios are a live topic in most interviews.
Mistakes that cost school counselor candidates
- Writing about helping students without a caseload size or a single measurable programme outcome
- Applying across levels with one resume, when a district hiring for elementary wants classroom lesson delivery experience
- Leaving out crisis and mandated reporting experience, which principals treat as a core safety requirement
Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.
