Paragraph one: certification area and level

Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.

Paragraph two: one thing students achieved

Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

What this field is judging behind the words

Newly qualified candidates are recruited in a compressed spring window, and principals often interview a dozen for one vacancy. The placement is treated as the evidence base, so panels ask what you taught alone, for how long, and what your mentor would say about your classroom management. A demonstration lesson is common and usually carries more weight than the interview itself, and placement references are called early.

Mistakes that cost first-year teacher candidates

• Listing coursework titles instead of describing what you taught and to whom
• Being vague about licensure status when a principal needs to know if you can be hired in August
• Padding with unrelated jobs while the placement section stays two lines long

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

Public school teaching requires a state licence obtained through an approved preparation programme with required examinations, and the exact tests, coursework and reciprocity rules differ by state. Many states issue an initial, provisional or resident educator licence that converts to a professional one after a mentored induction period. Say clearly whether yours is issued, pending or awaiting one remaining exam.

Induction and mentoring for the first few years, then a professional licence, additional endorsements and a grade or subject you settle into. Extra endorsements open more doors early on than length of service does.
