Paragraph one: certification area and level

Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.

Paragraph two: one thing students achieved

Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.

What this field is judging behind the words

Community college searches are committee-run and slow, often taking a full term from posting to offer, and applications are screened first against a minimum qualifications matrix. A teaching demonstration to the committee is almost always required and frequently decides the outcome. Committees ask how you would teach a class holding school leavers, returning adults and students working full time, and what you do about those who disappear early.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost community college professor candidates

• Submitting a research-heavy CV when the committee is hiring a teacher
• Not documenting graduate credit hours in the discipline, which can disqualify an application outright
• Treating developmental courses as beneath mention when they are most of the teaching load

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

Teaching credit-bearing courses generally requires a masters in the discipline, or a masters plus a defined number of graduate credit hours in it, a threshold set by regional accreditors and documented in your file. No teaching licence is involved. Career and technical programmes instead require industry credentials and occupational experience. Where this leads if you get it

Adjunct to full-time faculty, then tenure where it exists, department chair, dean and academic vice president. A doctorate is not required to teach but is usual for administrative advancement.
