Paragraph one: certification area and level

Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.

Paragraph two: one thing students achieved

Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.

What this field is judging behind the words

Charter searches are run by the board, often with a network or founding team involved, and move faster than district processes. Boards want evidence you can hold enrolment, because per-pupil funding is the entire budget and a shortfall becomes a staffing cut within a term. Expect questions on the authorizer relationship and renewal evidence, plus a written task and a session with parents.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost charter school principal candidates

• Presenting a district leadership resume that assumes central office support the charter does not have
• Leaving out enrolment and retention figures, which a board treats as survival metrics
• Never mentioning the authorizer relationship or renewal cycle you have worked through

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

Charter schools are public but independently governed, and whether an administrative licence is legally required depends on the state and sometimes on the charter contract itself, so requirements vary more here than in districts. Where required, the credential follows the usual route of a leadership masters, teaching experience and a licensure examination. Clearance and mandated reporter duties apply regardless.
