It works out pre-pregnancy BMI from height and pre-conception weight, places that BMI in one of the four published categories, and shows the total gain range and the second-and-third-trimester weekly rate that the guidelines list for that category. If you enter a current weight it also reports gain to date as a plain difference.

They were derived from observational data on outcomes across large groups, and they are explicitly framed as guidelines to be applied within clinical care. An obstetric provider — not a web page, and not this one — sets the range that applies to any individual pregnancy, and there are many well-recognised clinical reasons why an individual range would differ from the published band.
What This Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator Does
It does three things. It computes pre-pregnancy BMI using the standard formula. It looks up the published total gain range and weekly rate for the resulting category. And it reports gain to date, if you supply a current weight, alongside the amount the published weekly rate corresponds to across the weeks since week 13.
What it does not do is score you, set you a target, or tell you whether your gain is appropriate. That distinction is not legal caution for its own sake — it reflects how these guidelines were built. The categories are wide, the underlying data are observational, and individual circumstances that shift the appropriate range are common rather than exotic.
This is a different job from the date tools in our pregnancy set. Our due date calculator estimates a delivery date from a last menstrual period or conception date, and the pregnancy week calculator converts a date into a gestational week. How to Use It
- Choose your unit system. The published table gives total ranges in both pounds and kilograms, so switching units shows the source figures rather than a conversion for the totals.
- Enter height and pre-pregnancy weight. Pre-pregnancy weight is the important one — the categories are defined on BMI before conception, so using current weight will place you in the wrong band.
- Enter the gestational week. Use your provider's dating rather than your own estimate; ultrasound dating frequently differs from last-menstrual-period dating by a week or more.
- Optionally enter current weight. The tool subtracts to give gain to date, and shows what the published weekly rate corresponds to over the weeks since week 13.
- Take the numbers to your appointment. That is the entire intended use of this page: to let you read the published table before a conversation, not instead of one.
The Published Ranges and How They're Applied
The 2009 guidelines set four categories on pre-pregnancy BMI, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, or as 703 times weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared. For a singleton pregnancy the published recommendations are: underweight (BMI below 18.5) 28 to 40 pounds, or 12.5 to 18 kilograms; normal weight (BMI 18.5 to 24.9) 25 to 35 pounds, or 11.5 to 16 kilograms; overweight (BMI 25.0 to 29.9) 15 to 25 pounds, or 7 to 11.5 kilograms; and obese, all classes (BMI 30.0 and above), 11 to 20 pounds, or 5 to 9 kilograms.
Alongside each total, the guidelines publish a mean rate of gain for the second and third trimesters, with a range in brackets: 1 pound per week (1 to 1.3) for underweight, 1 pound per week (0.8 to 1) for normal weight, 0.6 pounds per week (0.5 to 0.7) for overweight, and 0.5 pounds per week (0.4 to 0.6) for obese. Work the default through. A height of 65 inches and a pre-pregnancy weight of 140 pounds gives BMI = 703 × 140 ÷ 65² = 98,420 ÷ 4,225 = 23.3, which falls in the normal weight band. The published total range is therefore 25 to 35 pounds, and the weekly rate is 0.8 to 1.0 pounds. At week 24 that is 11 weeks past week 13, so the rate range corresponds to 8.8 to 11.0 pounds accumulated over that stretch. A current weight of 152 pounds gives a gain to date of 12 pounds, which includes whatever was gained in the first trimester as well.
Why the Rate Figures Start at Week 14
The guidelines publish weekly rates for the second and third trimesters only, and deliberately leave the first trimester without a rate. That is not an oversight. First-trimester gain is small relative to the total, highly variable between individuals, and frequently disrupted by nausea and vomiting, which can produce no gain at all or a net loss in an entirely ordinary pregnancy.
The practical consequence is that a weekly rate is only a meaningful comparison from around week 14 onwards, and even then it is a mean across a category rather than a schedule. Gain in real pregnancies is not linear; it comes in uneven steps, and a flat fortnight followed by a heavier one is unremarkable. Reading a single week's change as a signal is the most common way these figures get over-interpreted.
This is also why the tool separates gain to date from the rate calculation instead of merging them into a single verdict. Your total gain includes a first-trimester component that the published rate does not describe, so subtracting one from the other would produce a number that looks precise and means very little.
What the Categories Do and Do Not Capture
BMI is a ratio of weight to height squared. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, it does not account for frame size, and its category cut-offs were not derived with pregnancy in mind. Two people at the same BMI can have very different body composition, and the published band will be identical for both.
Several situations sit outside these guidelines altogether. Multiple pregnancies are addressed separately in the source report and are not implemented here, because the guidance for twins is provisional and stratified differently — if you are carrying more than one, this page's numbers do not apply to you and your provider's guidance is the only relevant source. Adolescent pregnancy, short stature, and a range of clinical conditions including gestational diabetes, hyperemesis, thyroid disorders and pre-existing conditions all affect what an appropriate range looks like. None of that is visible to a page that only knows a height and two weights.
There is also a measurement point that quietly matters: pre-pregnancy weight is very often recalled rather than measured, and recall error of several pounds is normal. Since the category boundaries are sharp, a recalled weight near a cut-off can flip the entire published range. If your BMI sits close to 18.5, 25 or 30, treat the category as uncertain rather than settled.
Why Both Ends of the Range Matter
The guidelines are two-sided, and public discussion usually collapses them into one side. The report's framing considers outcomes associated with gain below the range as well as above it, which is why each category is published as a band rather than a ceiling. A range with a floor is a different kind of statement from a limit.
That two-sidedness is also why the tool draws the bars as a span rather than a single line, and why the note beside the result says what it says. A number sitting outside a published population band is information to bring to a clinical appointment, not a conclusion, and certainly not something to act on by changing what you eat during pregnancy without professional input.
