The period products cost calculator above is a household budgeting tool. It takes your cycle length, how many days you bleed, how many products you use a day and what you pay for them, and turns that into a cost per period, a cost per year, and a projection over as many years as you want to look at. It then compares that against a reusable option priced entirely by you.

What This Period Products Cost Calculator Does

It does arithmetic on counts and prices, and nothing else. The chain is short: cycle length gives periods per year, days times products per day gives items per period, items times unit price gives cost per period, and the rest is multiplication out to a year and to a lifetime figure.

The reusable comparison works the same way. You give the total upfront cost of a set and how often you would replace it, and the tool works out how many purchases that means over the years you are projecting and what it comes to. It also reports the break-even point — how long the reusable option takes to cost less than the disposables it replaces, at your numbers.

There is deliberately no health content anywhere on this page. It does not suggest how often products should be changed, it does not recommend product types, and it does not comment on anything medical. Those are matters for a clinician and for the guidance printed on the packaging.

How to Use It

  1. Enter your typical cycle length and how many days you bleed. Both vary, so use a figure that reflects a normal month for you.
  2. Enter how many products you use per day, averaged across the whole period.
  3. Enter the price of a pack and how many items are in it — from a receipt if you have one.
  4. Add any other per-period spend you want counted, such as liners or laundry.
  5. Price a reusable option and set how often you would replace it, then choose how many years to project.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

Five steps, all of them plain multiplication.

Periods per year = 365.25 ÷ cycle length in days. The 365.25 accounts for leap years.

Items per period = days of bleeding × products per day.

Unit price = pack price ÷ items per pack.

Cost per period = items per period × unit price, plus any other per-period spend.

Annual cost = cost per period × periods per year, and the projection is that annual figure times the number of years.

Work the defaults through. A 28-day cycle gives 365.25 ÷ 28 = 13.04 periods a year. Five days at four products a day is 20 items per period, so 260.9 items a year. A pack of 18 at 6.00 is 0.3333 per item, so a period costs 20 × 0.3333 = 6.67 and a year costs 6.67 × 13.04 = 86.96. Over 40 years that is 3,478.57.

The reusable side: a 50.00 set replaced every 5 years needs 8 purchases across 40 years, which is 400.00. Break-even against 86.96 a year comes at 50.00 ÷ 86.96 = 0.575 years, or about 7 months. Change any input and all of those move; the point of the page is that you can see which input is driving the number.

Why Lifetime Figures Vary So Much Between People

Published lifetime totals for period products range across an enormous span, and the reason is not that anyone is being careless. The inputs genuinely differ by several times over.

Cycle length is the first multiplier. A 24-day cycle produces 15.2 periods a year; a 35-day cycle produces 10.4. That alone is a 46% difference in annual spend with everything else identical. Period length is the second: three days against seven is more than double. Products per day is the third, and it is the widest of all, because flow varies between people, between cycles and between days. Then there is the price, which is the input this tool refuses to guess. Unit prices differ by brand, by pack size, by retailer and by country, and the tax treatment differs too — the UK abolished VAT on period products from 1 January 2021, as the UK government announced at the time, while other jurisdictions still apply standard or reduced rates. A figure calculated with one country's prices does not transfer.

The practical consequence is that a lifetime total from a headline article is close to meaningless for any individual. The number that means something is the one built from your own cycle, your own usage and your own receipts, which is what this page produces.

Reading the Break-Even Honestly

The comparison here is a straight cost comparison and should be read as one. It says how long a reusable option takes to pay back at your prices and your usage, and nothing more.

Three things sit outside the arithmetic and are worth naming. First, a reusable option usually needs a disposable backup for some situations, so the disposable spend rarely drops to zero — if that applies to you, reduce the products-per-day figure rather than assuming it goes away entirely. Second, replacement intervals are manufacturer guidance and depend on care; the tool takes your figure at face value. Third, washing has a small water, energy and detergent cost that most comparisons omit; if you want it counted, add it to the other-spend field.

Fitting This Into a Household Budget

A yearly figure is more useful than a per-shop one because it is comparable. Once you know what this line costs you annually, you can set it against the other recurring lines in your budget rather than treating it as an unpredictable expense.

Two habits make the number smaller without changing anything about usage. Buying in larger pack sizes lowers the unit price, which the tool will show you directly if you enter a bigger pack and its price. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using a headline "average" instead of your own numbers. Cycle length, period length and usage each vary by a factor of two or more between people. Averages do not describe anyone.
  • Pricing per pack instead of per item. A cheaper pack with fewer items can cost more per use. Always enter both the price and the count.
  • Assuming reusables remove disposable spend entirely. Most people keep some disposables for backup. Reflect that in the products-per-day figure.
  • Comparing a nominal 40-year total against today's money. Long projections need an inflation adjustment before they mean anything.
  • Forgetting tax differences. The rate applied to these products differs by country and has changed in several, so prices from one place do not transfer to another.

How much do period products cost per year?

It depends entirely on your cycle, your usage and your prices, which is why this tool takes all three as inputs and publishes none of its own. At the round default figures on this page the annual total works out at about 87 in whatever currency you entered.

How many periods are there in a year?

365.25 divided by your cycle length. A 28-day cycle gives 13.0, a 24-day cycle gives 15.2 and a 35-day cycle gives 10.4. That single input changes the annual cost by nearly half across that range.

Why does the calculator not suggest how many products I need?

Because that is not a budgeting question. Usage varies widely between people and between days, and this page deliberately contains no guidance of that kind. Enter what you actually use, and follow the guidance printed on the packaging.

How is the break-even point worked out?

The upfront cost of the reusable set divided by the annual cost of the disposables it replaces. At 50 upfront against 87 a year, that is about seven months. It is a cost crossover only and says nothing about which option suits you.

Should I include laundry and backup products?

If you want the comparison to be fair, yes. Add washing costs and any disposable backup to the other-spend field, or reduce the products-per-day figure rather than assuming disposable use falls to zero.

Do prices differ by country?

Substantially, including in tax treatment. The UK removed VAT from period products on 1 January 2021, while other jurisdictions apply standard or reduced rates. Always use prices from where you actually shop.

Is a 40-year total realistic?

It is arithmetic, not a forecast. It assumes today's prices and today's usage hold for four decades, which they will not. Treat it as a scale indicator and run it through an inflation adjustment before comparing it with money today.
