The language learning time calculator above turns a set of assumptions you control into two numbers: the total study hours between where you are now and the CEFR level you want, and how long that takes at your actual weekly pace. It does not tell you how long a language takes. Nobody can, and the tools that claim to are quietly presenting institutional training figures as personal predictions.

What the Published Hour Figures Actually Are
You will see figures like "600 hours for Spanish, 2,200 for Japanese" quoted everywhere. They descend from the language training programmes run by United States government institutions. The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center's list of languages taught at DLIFLC groups its courses by length: thirty-six weeks for the shortest group, forty-eight weeks for the middle group, and sixty-four weeks for the longest, which covers Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Those durations are real and they are published. What they are not is a prediction for you. They describe full-time, six-hours-a-day, small-group instruction with professional instructors, delivered to students who were selected for language aptitude, are being paid to attend, and face consequences for failing. Every one of those conditions raises the hours-per-week and the return per hour far above what an evening learner gets. Reading the figure as "Japanese takes 2,200 hours" strips out the entire context that produced it.
That is why this tool takes the base hour figure as your input and uses the institutional data only for the relative difficulty multiplier — the ratio between the course lengths, which is the part that transfers most plausibly between contexts. If you think two hundred hours to A1 is optimistic for you, change it. The calculation is honest about being built on an assumption you supplied.
How to Use It
- Set your current and target levels. The tool counts the steps between them, and each step is costed separately because higher levels are not equal in size to lower ones.
- Pick the difficulty group that matches your target language, using the DLI grouping as the reference. The multiplier applies to your base figure, not to a number the tool invented.
- Set the base hours and the escalation to whatever you believe. These are the two assumptions the whole answer rests on, and they are deliberately exposed rather than buried.
- Enter your real weekly hours and weeks off. Planned hours are not studied hours; use the figure you have actually hit over the last month.
- Set an efficiency percentage to reflect how your study compares with structured instruction, then read the finish date as a scenario rather than a promise.
The Formula and How It Is Calculated
Each level step j, counting from zero for the step into A1, is costed at base × (1 + escalation)j. The steps between your current and target level are summed, then multiplied by the difficulty factor and divided by the efficiency fraction. That gives the study hours. Dividing by weekly hours gives weeks of study, and multiplying by 52 divided by your studying weeks per year converts study weeks into calendar weeks.
Work the default through. Starting from nothing and targeting B2 is four steps: into A1, A2, B1 and B2. With a base of 200 and 25 per cent escalation those cost 200, 250, 312.50 and 390.63 hours, summing to 1,153.13. The Group III multiplier of 48 divided by 36, or 1.3333, raises that to 1,537.50. Dividing by an efficiency of 0.70 gives 2,196.43 study hours. At eight hours a week that is 274.6 weeks of study, and with four weeks off a year it is 297.4 calendar weeks, or about five years and eight months.
That result is uncomfortable, and it should be. Eight hours a week is a serious commitment by hobbyist standards and it is still roughly a seventh of the weekly intensity of a full-time course. What the CEFR Levels Mean, and What They Do Not
The Common European Framework describes six levels from A1 to C2 in terms of what a learner can do, not how long it took to get there. Cambridge University Press and Assessment's page on international language standards sets out the six-point scale as a description of language ability. Notably, it attaches no study-hour figure to any level, and neither does the framework itself.
That absence is deliberate and it is worth taking seriously. The framework is a descriptive scale, so a level is a statement about performance, not about input. Two learners can both be solidly B1 having spent very different amounts of time, and the same learner can be B2 in reading and A2 in speaking, which the single-number model here cannot represent at all.
The levels are also not equally spaced in effort. The jump from A1 to A2 is a matter of vocabulary and a few tenses; the jump from B2 to C1 involves register, idiom, cultural reference and the ability to follow fast unstructured speech between native speakers. That is why the escalation input exists, and why setting it to zero will make the higher levels look far cheaper than they are.
Why Hours Are the Wrong Unit for the Last Third
At the beginner end, hours are a reasonable proxy. There is a finite core of grammar and a few thousand high-frequency words, and time spent moves you through them fairly predictably. The relationship between hours and progress is close enough to linear that a calculation like this one is genuinely informative.
From roughly B2 upward the relationship breaks. Progress starts depending on the composition of the hours rather than the count — how much is production versus reception, how much is corrected by someone competent, how much is in the register you actually need. A thousand hours of comfortable listening produces a different learner from a thousand hours of being corrected in conversation, and no hour-based model can distinguish them.
The practical reading is that this tool's output is most useful for the A1-to-B1 stretch and should be treated as increasingly indicative above that. If your target is C1 or C2, the finish date is best read as a lower bound on a plan whose shape matters more than its length.
