This glove size calculator does one thing: it takes the circumference of your palm and finds the nearest row on a real, named, published size chart. The chart it uses is the one Ansell publishes for its own gloves, which maps numeric sizes 5 to 12 onto palm circumferences from 137 mm to 295 mm and gives the matching letter sizes from XXS to XXXL. Nothing on this page is invented. If a size system could not be traced to a source, it is not here at all.

That sounds like a small distinction until you compare sizing pages. Most of them present a table with no attribution, and the numbers drift between sites because each one copied the last. What This Calculator Does

It converts your measurement into millimetres, compares it against the eight rows of the published chart, and reports the nearest row along with the letter size that row carries. It also tells you how far your hand is from that row in millimetres, which is the number that actually matters. A hand 2 mm from a chart row will almost certainly fit that size. A hand sitting 13 mm between two rows is a hand that will find both sizes imperfect, and knowing that in advance saves a return.

If your palm falls outside the range the chart covers — below 137 mm or above 295 mm — the tool says so instead of extrapolating a size that the manufacturer does not make.

How to Use It

  1. Choose your units. Centimetres, inches or millimetres — the tool converts everything to millimetres because that is the unit the published chart uses.
  2. Measure the palm circumference. Around the widest part, below the knuckles, thumb excluded. A dressmaker’s cloth tape is far better than a rigid steel rule here.
  3. Measure your dominant hand. For most people it is measurably larger, and a glove that fits the larger hand can be lived with on the smaller one.
  4. Add hand length if you have it. It is reported back for cross-checking against a maker’s own chart, which may list both dimensions.
  5. Set your fit preference if your measurement falls between two rows, then read both the size and the millimetre gap before you buy.

The Chart This Page Uses, and Where It Comes From

Ansell’s published sizing chart gives eight rows. Size 5 is XXS at 137 mm, size 6 is XS at 152 mm, size 7 is S at 178 mm, size 8 is M at 203 mm, size 9 is L at 229 mm, size 10 is XL at 254 mm, size 11 is XXL at 279 mm, and size 12 is XXXL at 295 mm. The chart itself carries the note that it is intended as a guide, and this page repeats that rather than hiding it.

The numeric sizes are not arbitrary. Divide each figure by 25.4 and you get almost exactly the size number: 178 mm is 7.01 inches for size 7, 203 mm is 7.99 inches for size 8, 229 mm is 9.02 inches for size 9, and 254 mm is exactly 10 inches for size 10. The industrial glove size number is, to a very close approximation, palm circumference in inches. That is why the tool prints your measurement in inches next to the size: on the middle of the range the two numbers should agree.

Worked example, which you can check by hand. A 22 cm palm is 220 mm, or 8.66 inches. The two nearest chart rows are size 8 at 203 mm and size 9 at 229 mm. The gaps are 17 mm and 9 mm, so the nearest row is size 9, letter size L, and the tool reports a 9 mm distance to it. Notice that the inches figure, 8.66, sits between the two size numbers exactly as the millimetre comparison does — the two routes agree, which is the check that tells you the chart and the inch rule are the same rule.

Why Hand Length Does Not Choose the Size Here

The international standard for protective gloves, ISO 21420, defines a sizing system in its Annex B based on both hand circumference and hand length, covering sizes 4 to 13. It would be reasonable to expect a two-dimensional lookup. The complication is that the 2020 revision changed what the standard requires: as the testing house SATRA sets out in its summary of EN ISO 21420, the standard no longer publishes a list of minimum glove lengths for each size, leaving that to product-specific standards where it matters.

So there is a circumference chart this page can point you at and stand behind, and there is a length dimension that no longer maps to a single published number. Rather than invent a length band, the tool takes your length, converts it, and hands it back for you to compare against whatever chart your intended maker publishes. That is less satisfying than a second lookup and considerably more honest.

Length still matters in practice. Two people with identical palm circumference and a two-centimetre difference in finger length will not get on with the same glove. If your fingers are long relative to your palm, expect the fingertips to feel tight in the size the circumference chart gives you, and look for makers who publish a long or short variant.

What Changes the Answer After You Have the Number

Glove type is the biggest factor the chart cannot see. A thin nitrile disposable is meant to be close to the skin and unlined; a leather rigger’s glove has a stiff shell that has to be broken in; an insulated winter glove has bulk on the inside that eats a size or more. Wearing a liner underneath is the clearest case where the fit preference above should be set to roomier, because the liner is a real thickness the chart never accounted for.

Cut and construction matter too. A gunn-cut glove and a clute-cut glove of the same nominal size fit differently across the palm. Gloves with a keystone thumb sit differently from those with a wing thumb. Knitted gloves stretch, so a knit size 9 spans a range that a leather size 9 does not, and knits also lose that stretch as they age.

Then there is what the glove is for. A tight glove that restricts blood flow is a problem on a long shift, and a loose glove that can be snagged or drawn into a rotating machine is a different and more serious problem. A glove that is too big also destroys dexterity, which is exactly what most protective glove standards test for. Fit is a safety attribute of a protective glove, not a comfort preference, and this page sizes a hand rather than approving a glove for a task.

Why Two Gloves Marked the Same Size Are Not the Same Size

There is no global enforcement that a size 9 must fit a 229 mm hand. Manufacturers publish their own charts and cut to their own lasts, and the tolerances between them are wide. Sports and fashion gloves are worse than industrial ones: a cycling glove, a ski glove and a work glove marked large can differ by two centimetres of palm circumference. Sizing that runs by letter alone, with no millimetre figure attached, is the least reliable of all, because the letter is doing no measuring.

The practical move is to treat the number this page gives you as your baseline, then check it against the specific maker’s chart every time. If a product listing gives no chart at all, you are guessing, and the size on the label is not evidence. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring over the thumb. The published chart measures palm circumference with the thumb outside the loop. Including it adds two to three centimetres and pushes you a full size up.
  • Pulling the tape tight. A cloth tape drawn hard compresses the hand. Snug and level is the measurement the chart expects.
  • Measuring the smaller hand. Most people are asymmetric. Size to the dominant hand and accept a little slack on the other.
  • Assuming a letter size travels. A large from one maker is not a large from another. The millimetre figure travels; the letter does not.
  • Ignoring what goes under the glove. A liner, a bandage or a cold-weather insert is real thickness, and the chart knows nothing about it.
