A cross stitch chart is a grid of squares with no size of its own. How big the finished piece turns out depends entirely on the fabric you work it on, which is why the same chart can produce a bookmark or a wall hanging. This cross stitch calculator converts a stitch count and a fabric count into the finished dimensions, adds the margin you need for framing, and shows what the same chart would measure on the other counts you might have in the cupboard.

What This Cross Stitch Calculator Does

Enter the chart's width and height in stitches, choose the fabric count, and say whether you are stitching over one thread or over two. The tool works out the effective stitches per inch, divides the stitch counts by it to get the finished design size in inches and centimetres, and adds twice your margin to each dimension to give the piece of fabric to cut.

How to Use It

  1. Read the stitch count off the chart. Most charts print it as "140w × 180h". Ignore any printed dimensions unless they state the count they assume.
  2. Choose the fabric count. Aida is quoted in blocks per inch; evenweave and linen are quoted in threads per inch.
  3. Set the over-count. Aida is normally worked over one block. Evenweave and linen are normally worked over two threads, which halves the effective count.
  4. Set the margin. Three inches per side suits framing. Add more if the piece will be laced over a board or stretched on a large frame.
  5. Compare the bars before you cut. If the design comes out too large, moving up two counts shrinks it noticeably without changing a single stitch.

The Formula: Count, Over-Count and Finished Size

Everything follows from one division:

effective stitches per inch = fabric count ÷ threads per stitch
design width (in) = stitches wide ÷ effective stitches per inch
fabric to cut = design size + 2 × margin, in each direction

Worked example. A chart 140 stitches wide by 180 high, on 14-count Aida worked over one block. The effective count is 14, so the design is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches wide and 180 ÷ 14 = 12.86 inches high. With a 3-inch margin on every side, the fabric to cut is 16 by 18.86 inches — call it 16 by 19. The design contains 140 × 180 = 25,200 stitches.

Now work the same chart on 28-count linen over two threads. The effective count is 28 ÷ 2 = 14, which is identical, so the finished size is identical too. That equivalence is worth memorising: 28-count over two matches 14-count Aida, 32-count over two matches 16, and 25-count over two gives 12.5 stitches per inch. It is the reason experienced stitchers move between Aida and linen without redrawing anything.

Unit conversion is exact rather than approximate, which matters when a pattern is written in one system and your frame is sold in the other. NIST's reference on SI units of length gives the inch as exactly 25.4 millimetres, so a 10-inch design is exactly 25.4 cm — no rounding involved.

Aida, Evenweave and Linen: What the Count Actually Counts

The word "count" means slightly different things on different fabrics, and this is where most sizing errors begin.

Aida is woven in visible blocks with obvious holes at the corners. Its count is the number of blocks per inch, and one stitch normally occupies one block, so 14-count Aida gives 14 stitches per inch directly.

Evenweave and linen are plain-woven with the same number of threads per inch in both directions but no block structure. Their count is threads per inch, and the standard practice is to work each stitch over two threads, which is what makes the fabric behave like a grid half as fine. Working over one thread on 28-count linen is possible, produces a very fine 28 stitches per inch, and is called petit point at that scale.

The practical difference between them is not size but handling. Aida's stiffness and visible holes make it far easier for beginners and for anyone working without magnification. Linen drapes better and handles fractional stitches, backstitch placement and over-one detail more gracefully, because the thread grid is finer than the stitch grid. Choosing the Margin, and Why Three Inches

The margin is not decoration. It is the fabric that gets consumed by the process of finishing, and running short of it is the most common way a finished piece is spoiled.

Framing takes the most. Lacing or stretching over a mounting board needs enough fabric to wrap the board's edges and be secured on the back, which on a thick board can be two inches on its own. A hoop or frame needs fabric to grip while you stitch, and the outermost inch or so is often marked or distorted by the hoop and cannot be part of the design area.

Fraying takes more. Cut edges on evenweave and linen shed threads steadily, and the usual defences — a line of machine zigzag, a fold of masking tape, or overcasting by hand — all consume a little of the edge. Three inches per side covers all of this comfortably for a framed piece. Two inches is a reasonable minimum for something small that will be mounted flat. Larger designs and thicker mounting boards want four.

Changing the Count to Change the Size

Because size is stitches divided by count, the only ways to change a finished size are to change the count or to change the chart. Changing the count is free and changes nothing about the stitching.

The relationship is inverse, so the size scales by the ratio of the counts. A design that measures 10 inches on 14 count measures 10 × 14 ÷ 18 = 7.8 inches on 18 count, and 10 × 14 ÷ 11 = 12.7 inches on 11 count. Going up two counts typically shrinks a design by ten to fifteen per cent, which is often exactly what is needed to fit an existing frame.

Two things do change with the count, though neither is about size. Finer fabric needs fewer strands of floss in the needle — the thread has to sit in a smaller space without crowding — and it needs better light. Coarser fabric shows more of itself between the stitches, which matters when the design has large blocks of a single colour. Stitch a small test patch on any unfamiliar count before committing a large chart to it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trusting a chart's printed dimensions — they assume a fabric count that may not be yours. Always work from the stitch count.
  • Forgetting the over-two rule on linen — 28-count linen stitched over two threads is 14 stitches per inch, not 28. This one error doubles or halves the size.
  • Cutting with no margin — hoops distort the outer inch and framing consumes several. Three inches per side is the safe default.
  • Measuring the fabric before washing it — some fabrics shrink slightly on their first wash. Pre-wash if the finished piece will ever be washed.
  • Assuming a finer count just looks better — it also needs fewer floss strands and much better light. Test a patch first.
