Where the Ratios Come From
Seventeen sickles to a galleon and twenty-nine knuts to a sickle are stated in the text of the novels by J. K. One galleon therefore equals 17 × 29 = 493 knuts, which is the single most useful derived number in the system.
What the books do not give is a conversion into real money. There is no scene in which a galleon is priced in pounds sterling, and the various figures that circulate online come from interviews, adaptations, merchandise and fan estimates rather than from the novels. The Formula / How It's Calculated

Work the default through by hand. Seven galleons is 7 × 493 = 3,451 knuts. Twelve sickles is 12 × 29 = 348 knuts. Add the loose 20 and the total is 3,819 knuts. Divide by 493 and you get 7.7464 galleons, so at a rate of 5 per galleon the amount is 38.73 in your currency. A single sickle is worth 5 ÷ 17 = 0.2941, and a single knut is 5 ÷ 493 = 0.0101.
The reverse direction inverts that. Total knuts = amount ÷ rate × 493, rounded down to a whole knut. Then galleons is the whole-number part of knuts ÷ 493, sickles is the whole-number part of what remains divided by 29, and knuts is what is left after that. Forty units of currency at a rate of 5 is 8 galleons exactly, which is 3,944 knuts, which tidies to 8 galleons, 0 sickles and 0 knuts with nothing over.
The tidying step is ordinary base conversion, just with two irregular bases stacked on each other rather than one regular one. It is the same operation as turning 3,819 seconds into hours, minutes and seconds, except that the divisors are 29 and 17 instead of 60 and 60.
Why a Non-Decimal System Is Harder Than It Looks
Modern readers do arithmetic in base ten without noticing, and a system with divisors of 17 and 29 breaks every instinct that comes with that. You cannot move a decimal point to multiply by ten. You cannot glance at a figure and see roughly what fraction of a galleon it is.
