The question people ask is "how many bags of thinset for this room", and the honest answer is that the room is barely half the information. The other half is the trowel, because the notch geometry sets how thick a bed you are laying, and the difference between a small notch and a large one is a factor of two or three on the same floor. This thinset calculator works from the trowel you are actually holding.

What This Thinset Calculator Does
It computes the average thickness of mortar left on the substrate by a given trowel, multiplies that by the area to get a mixed mortar volume, adds any back-buttering and your waste allowance, then divides by the mixed yield of one bag to give a bag count. It also reports the coverage one bag gives at that notch, which is the number worth writing on the back of your hand.
Every product-specific figure is a field. The mixed yield per bag comes off the bag. The trowel dimensions come off the trowel. The price comes from your supplier. Nothing on this page is a published coverage rate, because published coverage rates belong to individual products and vary with the water ratio, the substrate absorption and how hard you press.
It does not tell you which trowel to use. That is specified by the tile format, the substrate flatness and the mortar, and it comes from the manufacturers' instructions and the relevant installation standards — not from an estimating tool.
How to Use It
- Enter the area. Length by width, or the total square footage in the length field with 1 in the width field.
- Measure the trowel. Depth of the notch, width of the notch and the flat land between notches. A ½ × ½ square notch is 0.5, 0.5 and 0.5.
- Add back-buttering if you are doing it. Large-format tile is commonly back-buttered, and the skim on the back of the tile is mortar you have to buy.
- Replace the yield figure. Take it from the bag or the data sheet. The placeholder is arbitrary and will give you an arbitrary bag count.
- Read the coverage per bag and sanity-check it against the manufacturer's own figure for the same notch. If they disagree badly, trust the manufacturer and adjust the yield.
The Formula and How It Is Calculated
Picture the trowel edge in cross-section. It lays a row of mortar ridges, each one as wide as the notch and as tall as the notch depth, separated by the flat land where the trowel scraped the substrate clean. Over one repeat of that pattern — one notch plus one land — the mortar occupies a fraction of the area equal to the notch width divided by (notch width + land).
So the average thickness of mortar spread over the whole floor is notch depth × notch width ÷ (notch width + land). On a ½ × ½ square notch that is 0.5 × 0.5 ÷ 1.0 = 0.25 inches. That is the figure the ridges collapse to when the tile is set and beaten in, which is why a half-inch trowel produces roughly a quarter-inch bed rather than a half-inch one.
Volume in cubic feet is area in square feet × (average thickness + back-butter) ÷ 12. Multiply by one plus the waste allowance and divide by the mixed yield per bag, then round up. Coverage per bag is the yield divided by the same thickness in feet.
Worked example: a 20 × 10 floor, 200 square feet, with a ½ × ½ square notch and no back-buttering. Average thickness is 0.25 inches, so the volume is 200 × 0.25 ÷ 12 = 4.167 cubic feet. With a ten per cent allowance that is 4.583 cubic feet. At the placeholder yield of 0.6 cubic feet per bag, that is 7.64 bags, rounded up to 8. Coverage per bag at that notch is 0.6 ÷ (0.25 ÷ 12) = 28.8 square feet.
Why the Trowel Matters More Than the Room
Run the same 200 square foot floor through three trowels and the answer moves further than most people expect. A ¼ × ¼ square notch gives an average bed of 0.125 inches and about half the mortar. A ½ × ½ gives 0.25 inches. A ¾ × ⅝ U-notch gives more again, and large-format work with back-buttering can double it a second time. Two estimates for the same room can legitimately differ threefold, and neither is wrong.
That is why any page that answers "bags per square foot" with a single number is answering a different question from the one you asked. The area is the easy part. The bed thickness is the part that decides the quantity, and it is set by the trowel, which in turn is set by the tile format and the flatness of what you are tiling onto.
Coverage, Contact and the Thing Estimating Cannot Tell You
Mortar coverage in the estimating sense — how many bags — is not the same as mortar coverage in the installation sense, which is the percentage of the back of the tile actually in contact with mortar. That second sense is a performance requirement in tile installation standards, checked by lifting a set tile and looking at the transfer, and it is the reason ridges have to be combed in one direction and collapsed properly rather than left as parallel tubes with voids between them.
Buying enough mortar does not achieve it; technique does. Open time, substrate absorption, skinning, the direction of the ridges relative to the tile and whether the tile is beaten in all decide whether the bed actually supports the tile. The installation methods and material standards for tilework in North America are published by the Tile Council of North America, whose handbook is the reference most specifications point at, and the underlying material and workmanship requirements sit in the ANSI A108 and A118 series. Follow those and the mortar manufacturer's instructions rather than a quantity calculator. Where tilework forms part of a regulated assembly — a wet room, a fire-rated floor, an accessible route — the model building codes published by the International Code Council and their local amendments govern, and the building department having jurisdiction has the final word on what is acceptable.
Large Format, Back-Buttering and Medium-Bed Mortars
Large tiles change the arithmetic twice over. They usually need a deeper notch, and they are commonly back-buttered as well, which stacks a skim on top of the notched bed. A sixteenth of an inch of back-butter on 200 square feet is another cubic foot of mortar on its own, which the calculator will show you if you enter it.
They also often call for a medium-bed or large-and-heavy-tile mortar rather than a standard thinset, because a thicker bed of ordinary thinset can shrink and slump. Those products have different yields per bag, which is another reason the yield is a field rather than a constant. Enter the figure for the product you are actually buying.

- Assuming the bed is as thick as the notch. The ridges collapse into the gaps, so a half-inch notch leaves roughly a quarter-inch average bed, not a half-inch one.
- Leaving the placeholder yield in place. Mixed yield per bag is product-specific. The number loaded here is arbitrary and exists only so the page shows a result.
- Forgetting the back-butter. On large-format work the skim on the back of the tile can be a third of the total mortar and it is easy to leave out of an estimate.
- Buying one bag exactly. Mortar has a working life once mixed and a partial bag left open absorbs moisture. Round up and keep the spare sealed.
- Confusing thinset with grout. They are different products doing different jobs at different stages, and neither substitutes for the other.
