They disagree because people remember their usual bedtime, not their actual week. What This Sleep Debt Calculator Does
You set a figure for the hours you are counting against, enter what you actually slept on each of the last seven nights, and the calculator subtracts. Nights below your figure add to the shortfall. Nights above it subtract from the shortfall. The headline is the cumulative total in hours and minutes, plus anything you carried in from previous weeks.
The supporting figures show the average night across the seven, how many individual nights fell below your figure, the largest single shortfall in the set, and — given a number of spare hours per night you tell it you have — how many nights of that surplus would be needed to bring the running total back to zero. Two adjacent tools on this site do different jobs and it is worth being precise about the boundary. The sleep time calculator is the page for the question "how much sleep is recommended for my age", and it estimates a weekly figure from one typical bedtime and wake time. It takes seven nights you enter individually and totals the difference, and it does not tell you what your figure should be.
How to Use It
- Set your comparison figure. This is the number of hours you are measuring against. The published adult range is 7 to 8 hours a day, but the box is yours — if you are counting against something else, enter that.
- Enter seven actual nights. Time asleep, not time in bed. If you know you were awake for forty minutes in the middle of the night, subtract it. Quarter-hour precision is plenty.
- Add any carried-over shortfall. Only if you have been tracking across weeks. Leave it at zero for a clean single-week reading.
- Set the spare hours figure. How much extra sleep per night is realistically available to you. The repayment number is only as meaningful as this input.
- Read the shape, not just the total. Two weeks with an identical total can look completely different across the bars, and the bars are usually the more informative half of the result.
The Formula — How It's Calculated
For each night, the shortfall is your comparison figure minus the hours slept. A positive result is a deficit, a negative result is a surplus. The cumulative total is the sum of all seven, plus any carried-over hours. In symbols: total = carried + Σ(need − actual) across the seven nights.
The average night is the sum of the seven actual values divided by seven. The largest single shortfall is the maximum of (need − actual) across the nights, reported as zero if every night met or exceeded the figure. The nights-to-clear figure is the running total divided by the spare hours per night, rounded up to a whole night, and it is only computed when the total is positive and the spare-hours input is above zero.
Worked example, using the values the page loads with. The comparison figure is 7.5 hours. The seven nights are 6.5, 6, 7, 5.5, 6.75, 9 and 8.25 hours, which sum to 49 hours exactly. Seven nights at 7.5 hours would be 52.5 hours. The cumulative shortfall is therefore 52.5 − 49 = 3.5 hours, or 3h 30m. The average night is 49 ÷ 7 = 7.0 hours. Five nights fell below 7.5. The largest single shortfall was Thursday, 7.5 − 5.5 = 2 hours. At one spare hour per night, clearing 3.5 hours takes 4 nights, because you cannot have half a night.
Notice what the average conceals. An average of 7.0 hours sounds unremarkable and sits just below the published range. The ledger shows a Thursday of five and a half hours and a weekend of nine and a quarter — a week with a two-hour swing in it, which the average erases completely. That is the whole reason for entering nights separately.
The Published Ranges, and What They Are
The figures most often quoted come from national health bodies. The US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute publishes recommended amounts by age: 7 to 8 hours a day for adults, 8 to 10 for teenagers aged 13 to 18, and 9 to 12 for school-age children. Those are population ranges from research on groups, and a range is not a target — it describes where most people in a studied population sat, not what any individual must hit.
That is why the comparison figure on this page is an input rather than something the tool decides for you from your age. A calculator that reads your age and then hands you a number has quietly turned a population statistic into a personal instruction, and this page does not do that. Set the figure yourself, or set it from the published range if that is what you want to measure against, and the arithmetic will be the same either way.
The NHLBI also uses the broader term sleep deficiency, which covers not just insufficient hours but sleeping at the wrong time of day, sleeping poorly, and sleep disorders. That distinction matters for reading your own total: this page can only measure the first of those four. Three of them are invisible to it.
Why the Arithmetic Overstates What a Total Means
The subtraction treats every hour as identical and interchangeable, and it treats surplus and deficit as symmetrical. Neither assumption is safe, and the calculator says so rather than hiding it.
A nine-hour Saturday does not undo a five-hour Thursday in the way that adding and subtracting hours implies, because the Thursday already happened and its effects on that Thursday and Friday were not deferred until the weekend. The ledger will show the two cancelling. Your week did not experience them as cancelling. Read the total as a bookkeeping figure for a quantity, not as a statement about how you felt or functioned.
Timing is invisible here too. Seven hours from 11pm to 6am and seven hours from 4am to 11am are the same number in this tool and are not the same thing physiologically, because sleep interacts with the body clock. Time in Bed Is Not Time Asleep
The single largest source of error in a hand-kept sleep ledger is entering time in bed. Almost nobody falls asleep instantly and almost nobody sleeps through unbroken, so time in bed routinely exceeds time asleep by a meaningful margin. If you consistently enter lights-out to alarm, your ledger will understate the shortfall week after week, and the error compounds in the same direction every time.
Wearables and phone apps estimate sleep from movement and heart rate rather than measuring it directly, and their nightly figures can differ from each other and from a clinical measurement. They are useful for trends and less reliable for any single night. If you are using one, treat its number as an estimate you are entering, not as a fact. Tracking Across Weeks Without Fooling Yourself
The carried-over field exists so you can run this as a rolling ledger, but a rolling total that only ever climbs stops being informative. Two habits keep it useful. First, reset the carry to zero at a fixed interval — monthly is a reasonable choice — so the number stays anchored to a recent period rather than becoming an ever-growing score. Second, record the nights as you go rather than reconstructing the week on Sunday, because reconstruction reliably smooths out the extremes.
It is also worth logging one or two things the calculator does not accept: what time you went to bed, and anything unusual about the day. A pattern that shows up as "Thursday is always the worst night" is more actionable than a total, and the totals alone will never surface it.
