Qualification is mostly employer-run: a structured training programme and a signed qualification card covering named systems and evolutions. Requirements differ sharply by plant type and regulator. Nuclear reactor operators hold NRC licences, while NERC system operator certification applies to grid and balancing authority roles rather than to plant operators generally. Some states and cities license stationary or boiler engineers, so check the rules for the jurisdiction you are applying in.
The first pass is licence grade and plant type. A plant supervisor checks the class or grade of your operator licence against what the facility requires, then reads for the process type and capacity you have run and whether you can work a rotating shift. Regulatory and reporting experience comes next, because that is what the plant is inspected on.
Describe the work in the units the trade uses: square footage, linear feet, tonnage, service calls per day, machines run, crew size. Add safety record and callback rate if you have them, because on a job site those are worth as much as speed. If you have run a crew or trained apprentices, say so plainly β that is the difference between a hand and a lead.
Generation employers hire slowly and check carefully, because operating authority carries real consequence. The resume is read for plant type, unit configuration and the systems you have started, loaded and shut down, then for how you behave under upset conditions. Qualification card progress is treated as the honest measure of what you can do unsupervised. Interviews cover procedures, clearances, log discipline and specific events you have worked through.
