What a foreman looks at first
The first pass answers two practical questions: can you legally do this work, and are you free to start. A foreman with a job beginning next week reads for the licence, the current tickets and the availability, and everything else on the page waits behind those.
Licences, tickets and safety training
Licensing is set by state or locality, generally apprentice, journeyman and master tiers requiring documented hours and examination. Backflow prevention tester and medical gas installer certifications are separate credentials with their own renewal cycles. Name your licensing jurisdiction.
How you actually get hired for this
Plumbing employers check the licence and the driving record, then ask about the work type, because service plumbing and new construction reward different skills. Interviews cover code, diagnostics and how you handle a customer during an emergency call. Backflow and medical gas work require separate certification and are asked about specifically.
What you built, at what scale, safely
Describe the work in the units the trade uses: square footage, linear feet, tonnage, service calls per day, machines run, crew size. Add safety record and callback rate if you have them, because on a job site those are worth as much as speed. If you have run a crew or trained apprentices, say so plainly — that is the difference between a hand and a lead.
Mistakes that cost plumber candidates interviews
- Writing "licensed plumber" with no state, level or licence number, which forces the hiring shop to guess whether you can pull permits
- Listing only tools and pipe materials, when a service company is buying your diagnostic speed and first-visit fix rate
- Hiding apprenticeship hours, which are the single number a shop needs to know whether you can test up
The top of the page: licence, tickets and what you can run
A foreman reading this has a job starting Monday. Put your licence class, your certifications with their dates, and the equipment you can operate at the very top — above the work history — because that is the information that decides whether you get the call. Save the paragraph-style summary for one or two lines at most.
Moving up in this trade
Apprentice to journeyman to master, then service manager, estimator or contractor. Master licensure and a contractor licence are what allow independent business.
Before you send it
Check every certification date is current and every licence number is right, since these are verified and an expired ticket ends an application.
