Licences, tickets and safety training
EPA Section 608 covers refrigerant handling on building equipment. OSHA 30 General Industry, lockout-tagout and arc flash awareness are standard for plant work. Building automation training is manufacturer-specific. Some jurisdictions require licensed operators for boilers above certain pressures or capacities, and those rules differ by state and city, so check locally.
How you actually get hired for this
Facilities managers hire on programme discipline. They want planned maintenance completed and recorded, not just reactive repairs, and they ask how you use a CMMS, how you prioritise when three faults land at once and how you handle a shutdown in an occupied building. Building automation experience is increasingly expected. Compliance records for lifts, fire systems and backflow devices are audited, so documentation habits are examined.
What you built, at what scale, safely
Describe the work in the units the trade uses: square footage, linear feet, tonnage, service calls per day, machines run, crew size. Add safety record and callback rate if you have them, because on a job site those are worth as much as speed. If you have run a crew or trained apprentices, say so plainly — that is the difference between a hand and a lead.

A foreman reading this has a job starting Monday. Put your licence class, your certifications with their dates, and the equipment you can operate at the very top — above the work history — because that is the information that decides whether you get the call. Save the paragraph-style summary for one or two lines at most.
Moving up in this trade
Technician to lead or chief engineer, then facilities manager or property engineering roles. Boiler operator licensing and controls expertise are the two credentials that most reliably raise the ceiling.
