A scale is an ordered set of pitches measured from a root. Every scale type is defined by its pattern of steps, and applying that pattern to a different root gives a different key with the same internal relationships. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a music scale generator can produce any key from a single pattern rather than needing a table of them.
What separates a useful tool from a lookup table is spelling. There is no such note as "the black key between F and G" in written music — depending on context it is F♯ or G♭, and choosing the wrong one produces a scale that is technically the right sounds and unreadable on a stave. What This Scale Generator Does

How to Use It
- Pick the root by its written name. F♯ and G♭ are listed separately because they produce different spellings even though they sound identical.
- Choose the scale or mode. The modes are listed in their conventional order from Ionian to Locrian.
- Read the notes and the step pattern together. The pattern tells you what makes the scale that scale, independently of the key.
- Check the accidentals against the key signature you are writing in, since they should agree for the diatonic modes.
- Add the octave when you want to see the final step that closes the pattern, which is easy to forget when counting by hand.
The Formula / How It's Calculated
Every scale type is stored as a list of semitone offsets from the root. Major is 0, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, which is the familiar whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half. Natural minor is 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10. Each mode is the same seven pitches started from a different degree, so Dorian is 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10 and Lydian is 0, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11.
Spelling is the second half. For a seven-note scale, the letter names advance by one for every degree, so a scale on D uses D, E, F, G, A, B, C in that order regardless of type. The tool then compares each letter's natural pitch class with the pitch the pattern requires and adds whatever accidental closes the gap — sharp, flat, double sharp or double flat.
Worked example. D major. The letters are fixed as D E F G A B C. The pattern requires pitch classes 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 1. Natural F is pitch class 5 and the scale needs 6, so it becomes F♯; natural C is 0 and the scale needs 1, so it becomes C♯. The result is D E F♯ G A B C♯, carrying two sharps — which is exactly the key signature of D major, and of its relative minor, B minor.
Why Spelling Matters More Than the Sound
F♯ and G♭ are the same key on a piano and different notes on paper. The choice is not arbitrary: it is determined by the requirement that a diatonic scale uses each letter once. G♯ major would need F double sharp, so nobody writes it — A♭ major is the same sounds with a sane spelling. Conversely, F♯ major and G♭ major are both perfectly writable, with six sharps and six flats respectively, which is why both appear in the root list here.
Get the spelling wrong and the notation becomes hard to read, because the eye tracks intervals by line and space position on the stave. A third written as a fourth with a flat looks like a different interval even though it sounds the same. Modes Are Rotations, Not Separate Scales
The seven diatonic modes contain the same seven pitch classes as a major scale; they differ only in which one is treated as home. D Dorian uses exactly the notes of C major, but centred on D, which is why it has no accidentals despite being a minor-sounding scale.
That relationship is useful two ways. If you know a major scale, you already know all seven of its modes — start on a different degree. But if you want a mode on a specific root, the parent-scale shortcut misleads: D Dorian and D major share a root and almost nothing else. Generate the mode on the root you actually want, which is what this tool does, rather than reasoning from the parent key.
The character of each mode comes from one or two altered degrees against major or minor. Lydian is major with a raised fourth; Mixolydian is major with a lowered seventh; Dorian is natural minor with a raised sixth; Phrygian is natural minor with a lowered second. The Three Minor Scales and Why There Are Three
Natural minor is the sixth mode of major and needs no explanation beyond that. Harmonic minor raises the seventh degree by a semitone, which creates a leading note a half step below the tonic and lets a dominant chord function properly in a minor key. That raise also produces an awkward step of a whole tone and a half between the sixth and seventh degrees.
Melodic minor exists to smooth that gap: it raises the sixth as well as the seventh going up, giving a scale that ascends like major with a flattened third. Traditionally it reverts to natural minor descending, because the leading note is only needed when approaching the tonic from below. This tool shows the ascending form and reverses it when you select descending order, so you should apply the traditional descending change yourself if you are writing in a classical idiom.
The practical consequence is that a piece in a minor key rarely uses only one of the three. Composers move between them according to what the harmony needs at that moment, which is why analysing a minor-key melody against a single fixed scale usually produces notes that look wrong and are not.
Pentatonic and Blues Scales Break the Letter Rule
Five-note and six-note scales cannot use each letter once, so their spelling follows the parent scale instead. Major pentatonic is degrees 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of the major scale, so it keeps those letters and skips the others. Minor pentatonic is 1, ♭3, 4, 5 and ♭7 of the natural minor.
The blues scale adds a flattened fifth to the minor pentatonic, and that note deliberately shares a letter with either the fourth or the fifth — A blues is A, C, D, E♭, E, G, using the letter E twice. That is not a mistake in the notation; it reflects the fact that the "blue note" functions as a chromatic passing tone rather than as a scale degree in its own right. Whole tone is the other exception: six notes evenly spaced, so one letter has to be skipped entirely and the spelling is a matter of convention rather than rule.
