How This Page Handles the Scoring Tables
This matters more than anything else on the page, so it comes first.
The Army publishes its scoring scales as official tables. Points are assigned in a table lookup, band by band, and the relationship between performance and points is not a straight line — it bends, and it bends differently for each event, age group and sex. Reproducing those tables from memory or from a third-party summary is exactly how a fitness calculator ends up giving people wrong numbers about something that affects their career.
So this tool does not contain them. Instead it asks you for the two figures that define your own bracket: the performance worth 60 points, and the performance worth 100 points. You read both off the official scorecard, and the calculator interpolates linearly between them, extending below the 60-point mark to show how far short a failing event fell.
The consequence is honest and worth stating plainly: points between the two anchors are approximations. They will be close at the ends and can differ by a few points in the middle, where the real table's curvature lives. The pass or fail logic, the aggregate thresholds and the per-event minimum are exact, because those are structural rules rather than table lookups. What This Military Fitness Test Calculator Does
It scores all five events, applies both gates that decide a pass, and shows you which event is holding you back.
The two gates are separate and both must be cleared. First, every event must reach 60 points — a single event below the minimum is a failed test no matter how strong the total. Second, the aggregate must reach the standard being tested against: 300 points under the general standard, or 350 under the combat specialty standard applied to a defined list of specialties on a sex-neutral, age-normed scale. The selector at the top switches between them.
The bars are the useful part for anyone training toward a test. Five events on one scale immediately shows the shape of an athlete: strength-heavy soldiers tend to have a tall deadlift bar and a short run bar, and endurance-heavy soldiers the reverse. The failing event is nearly always visible at a glance.
How to Use It
- Get the official scorecard for your bracket first. Age group and sex both change the anchors, sometimes substantially. The values this page loads with are an illustrative example and are not your standard.
- Enter the 60-point and 100-point performances into the anchor fields. For timed events, the 100-point anchor is a faster time than the 60-point one, and the tool handles that direction automatically.
- Enter your raw performances. Times go in as minutes and seconds separated by a colon, so a sprint-drag-carry of two minutes ten seconds is 2:10.
- Read the per-event bars before the total. Any bar under 60% of the track is a failing event, and that is the one to train.
- Switch the standard if you are in a combat specialty. The per-event minimum does not change, but the aggregate requirement rises from 300 to 350.
The Formula / How It's Calculated
Each event is scored on the same interpolation, with the direction flipped for events where a lower number is better.
For events where more is better — deadlift weight, push-up repetitions and plank duration — the score is 60 + 40 × (performance − anchor60) ÷ (anchor100 − anchor60), capped at 100. If the performance falls short of the 60-point anchor, the score becomes 60 × performance ÷ anchor60, which produces a proportional figure below 60 rather than simply reporting a fail.
For events where less is better — the sprint-drag-carry and the two-mile run — the numerator flips: 60 + 40 × (anchor60 − time) ÷ (anchor60 − anchor100), again capped at 100. A time slower than the 60-point anchor scores 60 × anchor60 ÷ time.
Each event score is rounded to a whole point, as the official scales are, and the five are added. The test passes when every event is at least 60 and the total meets the selected standard.
Worked example, matching the values this page loads with. Deadlift 200 lb against anchors of 140 and 340 gives 60 + 40 × (60 ÷ 200) = 72 points. Thirty hand-release push-ups against anchors of 10 and 57 gives 60 + 40 × (20 ÷ 47) = 77.02, so 77 points. A sprint-drag-carry of 2:10, which is 130 seconds, against anchors of 180 and 93 seconds gives 60 + 40 × (50 ÷ 87) = 82.99, so 83 points. A 2:30 plank, 150 seconds, against anchors of 90 and 260 gives 60 + 40 × (60 ÷ 170) = 74.12, so 74 points. A 17:00 two-mile run, 1,020 seconds, against anchors of 1,320 and 810 gives 60 + 40 × (300 ÷ 510) = 83.53, so 84 points. The total is 390, every event clears 60, and the attempt passes both the 300 general standard and the 350 combat specialty standard.
Why the Per-Event Minimum Is the Real Test
Soldiers who fail an AFT overwhelmingly fail on one event, not on the total. That is a design decision, not an accident.
An aggregate-only test would let a soldier bank a very high deadlift and coast through the run, which is precisely the profile the test exists to discourage. Requiring 60 in every event forces breadth. It means the marginal point of training is worth far more in your weakest event than in your strongest: taking a 95 to a 100 buys five points and no additional safety margin, while taking a 55 to a 62 turns a failed test into a passed one.
The practical consequence is that AFT preparation should be scheduled backwards from the weakest bar on the chart above, and the two events that most often produce that bar are the two-mile run and the plank — the aerobic and the isometric, both of which respond slowly and neither of which can be improved in the last fortnight before a test.
Training the Five Events Without Fighting Yourself
The AFT is deliberately awkward to train for, because it rewards maximal strength, muscular endurance, anaerobic capacity, isometric endurance and aerobic capacity in a single session. Those adaptations interfere with one another. Heavy deadlift volume blunts running adaptation and hard aerobic volume blunts strength gain, which is why a soldier who trains everything hard, all the time, tends to stall on everything.
The general framework for adult physical activity, including the distinction between aerobic and muscle-strengthening work and how much of each is recommended, is set out by the American College of Sports Medicine in its Physical Activity Guidelines resources. Two structural points are worth taking from any such framework. First, aerobic capacity and maximal strength sit at opposite ends of a continuum, so a plan that emphasises one for a block and maintains the other usually beats a plan that chases both simultaneously. Second, the sprint-drag-carry is the event that most rewards specific practice, because a large part of the time is technique — sled angle, grip, turning discipline — rather than fitness.
