A mcg to IU converter only works if it knows which vitamin you are converting. An International Unit is not a unit of mass at all — it is a unit of biological activity, defined separately for each substance by reference to an agreed standard preparation. That means the number of IU in a microgram is a property of the specific vitamin, and sometimes of the specific chemical form of that vitamin, rather than a general conversion anyone can apply.

How to Use It

  1. Select the vitamin and the chemical form first. Vitamin A has three factors depending on whether you are converting retinol, supplemental beta-carotene or dietary beta-carotene, and vitamin E has two.
  2. Check the label wording against the option you chose. "d-alpha-tocopherol" is the natural form; "dl-alpha-tocopherol" is synthetic. One letter changes the factor by half.
  3. Set the direction and the mass unit. Vitamin D is normally labelled in micrograms and vitamin E in milligrams, so the unit selector matters more than it looks.
  4. Read the factor field. It is the whole calculation. If it does not match the source you are working from, replace it.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

Everything runs through milligrams. IU = mass in mg × factor, and mass in mg = IU ÷ factor. Micrograms are milligrams divided by 1,000, so the per-microgram factor shown in the fourth box is simply the factor divided by 1,000.

Worked example with the values the page loads with. Vitamin D, 25 micrograms, converting to IU. That is 0.025 mg, and the factor is 40,000 IU per milligram, so 0.025 × 40,000 = 1,000 IU. The equivalent statement is the one printed on most labels: 1 mcg of vitamin D is 40 IU, and 25 × 40 = 1,000.

Vitamin E is where the arithmetic surprises people. Fifteen milligrams of natural alpha-tocopherol is 15 × 1.49 = 22.35 IU, which the fact sheet rounds to 22.4, while the same 15 mg of synthetic alpha-tocopherol is 15 × 2.22 = 33.3 IU. Those are the worked examples given in the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet, and they show that the IU figure is larger for the synthetic form because a milligram of it is being credited differently, not because it contains more substance.

Where Each Factor Comes From

All the factors here are the ones published by the US National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements in its health professional fact sheets.

For vitamin D, the Vitamin D Health Professional Fact Sheet gives the relationship of 1 microgram to 40 IU, which applies to both ergocalciferol (D2) and cholecalciferol (D3). This is the simplest case: one vitamin, one factor, both common forms treated alike.

For vitamin A, the Vitamin A and Carotenoids Health Professional Fact Sheet expresses amounts in micrograms of retinol activity equivalents, and gives different IU relationships by form: 1 IU of retinol is 0.3 mcg RAE, 1 IU of supplemental beta-carotene is 0.15 mcg RAE, and 1 IU of dietary beta-carotene is 0.05 mcg RAE. The reason is absorption and conversion — the body does not turn dietary carotenoids into retinol with anything like full efficiency, so the same IU count represents different amounts of retinol activity depending on the source.

For vitamin E, the Vitamin E Health Professional Fact Sheet states that 1 mg of alpha-tocopherol is equivalent to 1.49 IU of the natural form or 2.22 IU of the synthetic form, and gives the 15 mg worked examples quoted above. Natural vitamin E is a single stereoisomer; the synthetic version is a mixture of eight, only some of which the body retains, and the two factors encode that difference.

Why There Is No General mcg-to-IU Factor

An International Unit is defined per substance, by international agreement, against a reference preparation whose biological activity was measured. One IU of vitamin D and one IU of vitamin A have nothing numerically in common; they are two separate definitions that happen to share a name, in the same way that a "cup" of flour and a "cup" of water share a name but not a mass.

The practical consequence is that a search result offering "the mcg to IU conversion" without naming a vitamin is describing something that does not exist. It has picked one — usually vitamin D, because that is the most searched — and left the assumption unstated. Applying that factor to vitamin A overstates the result by a factor of twelve.

Several vitamins have moved away from IU entirely. Modern labelling for vitamins A, D and E in many jurisdictions now uses micrograms or milligrams as the primary figure, with IU shown alongside or dropped completely, precisely because activity units caused this confusion. If your source is recent and gives only a mass, no conversion is needed at all.

Label Reading, Rounding and Precision

Two things go wrong at the label. The first is the natural-versus-synthetic distinction in vitamin E, which hinges on the prefix: d-alpha-tocopherol or RRR-alpha-tocopherol is natural; dl-alpha-tocopherol or all-rac-alpha-tocopherol is synthetic. Tocopheryl acetate and succinate are ester forms of either. A single letter changes the factor by 49%.

The second is retinol activity equivalents. A vitamin A figure in mcg RAE is not interchangeable with a figure in plain micrograms of a carotenoid, because RAE already has the conversion efficiency built into it. Converting a carotenoid mass as though it were retinol overstates activity by a wide margin.

On precision: a converted figure inherits the accuracy of the original. Supplement labels are rounded — a product declaring 1,000 IU of vitamin D converts to exactly 25 mcg, but a product declaring 25 mcg might contain anything the manufacturing tolerance allows.
