What This Lifetime Earnings Calculator Does

Enter your current salary, your age, the age you intend to stop working, an average annual raise and an inflation rate. The calculator projects each year's salary individually, sums them, and reports the nominal total alongside the same total discounted into present-day purchasing power.

Two features keep the projection honest. The plateau age reflects a well-documented pattern: earnings tend to rise quickly through early and middle career and then flatten, so compounding a raise rate all the way to retirement badly overstates the result. After the plateau age this model grows pay at inflation only, holding it flat in real terms. The earnings-to-date field lets you add what you have already earned, converting a forward-looking projection into a whole-career figure.

How to Use It

  1. Use gross salary, not take-home. Lifetime earnings are conventionally measured before tax, and mixing bases makes the figure impossible to compare with published statistics.
  2. Be conservative about the raise rate. A long-run average across a whole career is far lower than a good year, and small differences compound enormously.
  3. Set the plateau age honestly for your field. Some professions peak in the forties, others continue rising into the sixties.
  4. Get earnings to date from records, not memory — tax transcripts or annual social insurance statements usually list historical earnings year by year.
  5. Read the real figure first. The nominal total is the attention-grabbing one; the today's-money total is the one that means something.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

Each future year's salary is the previous year's grown by one rate: the raise rate before the plateau age and the inflation rate after it. Nominal lifetime earnings are the sum of those salaries. The real total discounts each year back to today: real total = Σ salary in year t ÷ (1 + inflation)ᵗ, where t counts years from now.

Work the defaults. A salary of 52,000 at age 32, working to 67, is 35 working years. Pay grows at 3.2 percent a year until the plateau at 55 and at 2.5 percent thereafter. That takes the salary to about 103,982 at age 54, and to 139,844 in the final year.

Summing every year gives nominal future earnings of about 3,198,754. Adding 310,000 already earned produces a whole-career total of roughly 3,508,754. Discounted at 2.5 percent, those future earnings are worth about 2,015,083 in today's money — 63.0 percent of the nominal figure. Inflation removes more than a third of the headline number, and it does so silently.

The bars fill in the rest. Starting work at 22 and finishing at 67 is a 45-year career, of which 10 years are done: 22.2 percent complete. But only 8.8 percent of nominal lifetime earnings have been received, because early-career pay is the lowest of the whole run. That asymmetry between time served and money earned is one of the more useful things this calculation reveals.

Why an Early Raise Is Worth So Much More Than a Late One

Because every subsequent raise is applied to the new base, a pay rise early in a career compounds across every remaining year. The effect is far larger than most people assume, and it is the single strongest argument for negotiating hard at the start rather than waiting until you feel established.

Run it in this calculator directly. Raise the starting salary from 52,000 to 55,000 — a 5.8 percent increase, roughly one good negotiation — and every one of the 35 projected years rises by the same proportion, adding around 185,000 to nominal lifetime earnings. The same 3,000 gained ten years later applies to twenty-five years instead of thirty-five and compounds from a higher base for less time, so it is worth considerably less.

The raise rate itself is even more powerful. Changing the average annual raise from 3.2 percent to 4.2 percent — one percentage point — lifts the nominal total by several hundred thousand over the same career, because the difference compounds every year until the plateau. That is why the assumption deserves care rather than optimism: it is the input the answer is most sensitive to, and an over-generous figure produces a comforting number that describes nobody's actual career.

What a Projection Cannot Know

This is a model of a smooth career, and almost nobody has one. Naming what it omits is more useful than pretending the output is a forecast.

It assumes continuous employment. Redundancy, illness, caring responsibilities and parental leave all interrupt earnings, and the cost is larger than the missing salary alone because the base from which future raises compound is also lower afterwards. It assumes a single trajectory, whereas a career change can reset earnings downward before rising more steeply. It ignores non-salary compensation entirely — employer pension contributions, equity, healthcare and other benefits can add a substantial share to total remuneration without appearing in the salary figure.

It also assumes the plateau is a smooth flattening rather than what often happens in practice, which is a step change. And it takes no view on whether your sector's pay will keep pace with the wider economy. Published earnings statistics are the corrective here: for the United Kingdom the Office for National Statistics reported in its employee earnings in the UK: 2025 bulletin that median gross weekly earnings for full-time employees were £766.60 in April 2025, up 5.3 percent in nominal terms but only 1.1 percent in real terms after CPIH. That gap between nominal and real growth is exactly what a long projection has to contend with, and it is a description of that measured population in that year — not a statement about what any individual should expect.

The Number That Matters Is What You Keep

Lifetime earnings measure what passes through your hands, not what remains. The difference is decided by a savings rate, and the arithmetic there is unforgiving in a way that is worth seeing clearly.
