Growing hair out is an exercise in patience with very slow feedback, which is exactly the situation where arithmetic helps. Scalp hair grows at a fairly predictable average rate, and the difference between "this is taking forever" and "this is on schedule" is usually just not having done the sum. This hair growth calculator does it: current length, target length, an average monthly rate and your trimming habit, projected forward to a date.

It does not diagnose anything, does not evaluate products, and cannot tell you why your own rate differs from the average — it takes the rate as an input precisely because that number is personal.
What This Hair Growth Calculator Does
It projects length forward at a constant net rate. Gross growth is the monthly rate you enter. From that it subtracts the average monthly cost of trimming, which is the length removed per trim divided by the number of months between trims. The difference is net growth, and the time to your goal is the remaining distance divided by that net figure.
Alongside the headline answer it shows the length you would reach at your chosen horizon, how much total growth that represents, and how much of it the scissors will have taken. That last figure is usually the surprise. How to Use It
- Measure current length. From the scalp to the ends with the hair pulled straight. Curly hair measured in its natural state will read much shorter than its true length.
- Set a goal length. If you are aiming at a position on your body rather than a number, measure from your scalp to that point first.
- Enter a growth rate. The default is a published population average. Your own rate is better if you know it — mark a strand, wait three months, measure the difference and divide by three.
- Enter your trimming habit honestly. Length removed per trim and months between trims. This is what turns a two-year projection into a four-year one.
- Read the time and the horizon figures. The horizon row tells you where you will actually be at a date you can picture, which is more motivating than a total.
The Formula / How It's Calculated
Net monthly growth = growth rate − (length per trim ÷ months between trims). Months to goal = (goal length − current length) ÷ net monthly growth. Length at horizon = current length + (net monthly growth × horizon months). Total grown over the horizon = growth rate × horizon. Total removed = grown − (length at horizon − current length).
Worked example, which is what the page loads with. Current length 25 cm, goal 50 cm, rate 1 cm per month, trimming 1 cm every 3 months. The trim costs 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333 cm per month, so net growth is 1 − 0.333 = 0.667 cm per month. The remaining 25 cm therefore takes 25 ÷ 0.667 = 37.5 months, or a little over three years. Over a 24-month horizon the hair grows 24 cm gross, loses 8 cm to trims and reaches 41 cm. Stop trimming entirely and the same goal arrives in 25 months instead of 37.5 — which is the whole argument in one line.
Where the Default Rate Comes From, and Why Sources Disagree
The default of 1 cm per month is the figure given in the StatPearls review of hair physiology hosted by the NIH National Library of Medicine, which states scalp hair grows at about 0.35 mm per day, 1 cm per month, or 15 cm per year. The US National Library of Medicine's consumer page on hair problems puts it at about half an inch a month, which is roughly 1.27 cm — noticeably more.
Both are averages of populations that vary, and the gap between them is a useful warning. A projection built on an average rate carries the spread of that average with it, so a 37-month answer should be read as "somewhere around three years", not as a date. If you want a figure that means something for you specifically, measure your own rate over three months and put that number in the field.
Growth Is Not Linear Over Long Horizons
This calculator assumes a constant rate, and over a year or two that is a reasonable simplification. Over five or ten years it is not, for a structural reason: each follicle grows for a limited period and then stops. The anagen phase where a hair actively lengthens runs for a few years, after which the follicle transitions and rests before shedding that hair and starting again. That means every head of hair has a maximum length set by growth rate multiplied by anagen duration, and once you approach it, ends shed as fast as new length appears.
Practically, this shows up as hair that seems to "stop growing" at a certain length. It has not stopped; individual hairs are reaching the end of their cycle. A projection that carries a straight line out to a length beyond your terminal length will simply never come true, and no schedule of trims or products changes the underlying cycle. Treat horizons beyond about three years as arithmetic rather than prediction.
Trims Are the Variable You Actually Control
Growth rate is largely not under your control. Trim frequency entirely is, and the arithmetic is unforgiving. Trimming 1 cm every three months removes a third of an average month's growth. Trimming 2.5 cm every eight weeks removes 1.25 cm a month — more than the average rate, meaning length goes backwards no matter how long you wait.
That is not an argument for never trimming, and this page does not make one. Damaged ends split further up the shaft and are usually removed eventually anyway, so trimming less can mean cutting more later. The point of putting the number in front of you is that the trade-off becomes visible: you can see exactly what a schedule costs in months, and decide with that in hand.
Measuring Consistently Matters More Than Measuring Precisely
Most apparent inconsistency in hair growth tracking is measurement error. Wet hair is longer than dry, straightened hair is much longer than curly hair in its natural state, and hair measured from the crown is longer than the same head measured at the nape. Any of those differences can exceed several months of real growth.
Pick one method — same section, same dryness, same tension, same reference point — and use only that for comparisons. Photograph against a fixed background if you can.
