This gut health score calculator is a self-audit of four habits that get discussed under that heading: how many different plant foods you ate this week, how much fibre you get, how often you eat fermented foods, and how much you sleep. It converts each into a share of a stated reference and combines them into a single number out of a hundred. It is a way of seeing your own week at a glance, and that is the entire claim being made for it.

What This Gut Health Score Calculator Does

It counts plant points — the number of distinct plant foods you ate in a week — and compares that against a widely quoted reference of thirty. It compares your fibre intake against the thirty grams a day that UK guidance sets, scores fermented servings against a daily-ish reference of seven a week, and gives a sleep component that peaks between seven and nine hours. The four components carry weights of 40, 30, 15 and 15 respectively, and the breakdown bars show exactly how many points each contributed.

Nothing here is a target set by an authority. Two of the reference figures are drawn from published sources and named below; the weightings that combine them into one number are an editorial choice made for readability. If you only trust the individual counts, use those and ignore the total — the components are shown separately for exactly that reason.

How to Use It

  1. Count plant points over a full week, not a day. Each distinct plant food counts once no matter how often you ate it.
  2. Estimate fibre per day from labels or a food diary. Most people are surprised how far short of thirty grams a typical day lands.
  3. Count fermented servings, meaning things like yoghurt with live cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso or tempeh.
  4. Enter typical sleep, not last night's.
  5. Read the four bars rather than the headline. The component that is furthest from its reference is the informative part.

The Scoring and a Worked Example

Each component is capped at its reference and scaled: plants score 40 × min(plants ÷ 30, 1); fibre 30 × min(fibre ÷ 30, 1); fermented 15 × min(servings ÷ 7, 1). Sleep scores the full 15 between seven and nine hours and tapers away from that band. The total is simply the sum.

Work the defaults through. Twenty-four plants gives 24 ÷ 30 = 0.8, so 32 points. Twenty-two grams of fibre gives 22 ÷ 30 = 0.733, so 22 points. Four fermented servings gives 4 ÷ 7 = 0.571, so 8.6 points. Seven hours of sleep sits inside the band and scores the full 15. The total is 77.6 out of 100, and the bars show at a glance that the fermented component is the one furthest from its reference.

Where the Thirty-Plant Reference Comes From

The number that launched a thousand food diaries comes from the American Gut Project, published as American Gut: an Open Platform for Citizen Science Microbiome Research in mSystems in 2018. The study compared participants eating more than thirty types of plants a week with those eating ten or fewer, and reported differences between the groups: several short-chain fatty acid fermenters, including Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Oscillospira species, were associated with the higher-diversity group, which also showed a lower abundance of several antibiotic resistance genes and higher molecular alpha-diversity.

Two caveats belong with that. It was a comparison between two self-selected groups in a citizen science cohort, not a trial, so it establishes association rather than cause. And thirty was the upper bin boundary in that comparison rather than a recommended intake — nobody derived it as a target. It is a useful, memorable reference precisely because it is concrete, but it is not a rule handed down by a health authority.

Why Fibre and Plant Diversity Are Different Questions

You can hit thirty grams of fibre from a narrow set of foods and you can hit thirty plants while eating very little of each, so the two components measure genuinely different things. Fibre is a quantity; plant points are a variety count. The NHS guidance on how to get more fibre into your diet puts the government recommendation at 30 g a day and notes that adults average around 20 g, which is why the default in this calculator sits below the reference rather than at it.

Keeping them separate also avoids double-counting. A single meal of lentils, brown rice, spinach, tomato, onion, garlic, cumin and coriander adds eight plant points and a substantial amount of fibre at the same time, but those are two different facts about the meal and collapsing them into one number would hide the trade-off people actually face.

What a Score Like This Cannot Tell You

It cannot tell you anything about your microbiome. Composition varies enormously between healthy people, changes with the seasons, with travel, with medication and with illness, and no questionnaire infers it. It cannot detect coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome or an infection, and a high score does not make any of those less likely. It also cannot see the parts of the picture that a four-input form has no room for: medication and antibiotic history, alcohol, smoking, physical activity, stress, and how food is actually distributed across a day.

There is a category of reader for whom a page like this is actively unhelpful, and it is worth naming. If a high-fibre or high-variety diet has been restricted on clinical advice — during a flare, before a procedure, on a low-FODMAP trial, or with a diagnosed condition — then a score that rewards more plants and more fibre is measuring the wrong thing entirely. The clinical instruction wins, every time.

Counting Plant Points Without Fooling Yourself

The count is only useful if the rules are applied consistently, and most inflation comes from three habits. The first is counting a plant twice because it appeared in two meals; the point of the exercise is variety across the week, so each food scores once. The second is counting processed derivatives as their source — refined white flour, sugar and most vegetable oils have had the fibre and most of the plant matter removed, and treating them as a plant point defeats the purpose. The third is counting negligible quantities: a single basil leaf on a pizza is technically a plant, but a garnish is not the same contribution as a portion.

The rules that genuinely help are more generous than people expect. Herbs and spices count, and a spice blend counts as its individual components. Different varieties of the same broad food — red and green cabbage, different beans, different nuts — count separately. Wholegrains count, so oats, barley, rye and buckwheat are four points rather than one. Coffee, tea and cocoa are plant-derived and are often counted too. Applied consistently week to week, the absolute number matters less than whether it is moving.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Counting the same plant repeatedly. Plant points are a variety count over a week, not a portion count.
  • Treating the total as a health measure. It is a summary of four self-reported habits and nothing more.
  • Reading thirty plants as an official recommendation. It was a bin boundary in a citizen science comparison, not a guideline.
  • Chasing the score during a clinical restriction. If a clinician has restricted fibre or variety, that instruction takes precedence.
  • Ignoring symptoms because the number looks good. Persistent pain, bleeding, weight loss or a change in bowel habit needs a clinician regardless of any score.
