Basal Body Temperature Calculator — the three-over-six thermal shift

Basal body temperature is retrospective. It confirms that ovulation has already happened; it does not predict that ovulation is coming. This page must not be used as contraception, and it identifies no safe days and no fertile days.
Switching the unit converts the threshold as well. A rise of 0.3 °C is 0.54 °F.
One reading per day, separated by commas, spaces or new lines, starting at whichever cycle day you began charting. Readings must be taken on waking, before getting up, at about the same time each morning, with the same thermometer in the same place. Missing days break the pattern the rule depends on, so leave gaps out and note that the sequence is incomplete.
The three-over-six rule as described in the literature asks for three consecutive readings at least 0.3 °C above the highest of the six preceding days. Charting conventions differ, so the threshold is editable.
Three is the published convention. Requiring more makes the rule stricter and pushes any detection later in the series.

The basal body temperature calculator above does one thing: it takes a series of daily waking temperatures and applies the three-over-six rule to find where a sustained thermal shift appears. It reports the reading at which the rule is first satisfied, the two phase averages, and the size of the step between them. That is a description of a chart you have already drawn.

Progesterone released after ovulation is what raises the temperature, so by the time a shift is visible the event it reflects has already passed. Nothing on this page predicts anything.

The Boundary You Need Before Anything Else

This page must not be used as contraception. It does not identify safe days, it does not identify fertile days, and it makes no statement about the likelihood of pregnancy in any cycle. Fertility awareness used as a method of avoiding pregnancy is a structured practice with several concurrent indicators, formal rules and, as the NHS states, instruction from a healthcare professional specially trained in it. A single temperature series read by a web page is not that, and treating it as though it were would be dangerous.

The NHS natural family planning page sets out what the method actually involves: recording body temperature, cervical secretions and the menstrual cycle together, every day, and learning the method from a trained professional rather than from a chart alone. It is explicit that on fertile days a condom is used or sex is avoided. That is a very different activity from what this calculator does.

What This Basal Body Temperature Calculator Does

You paste a series of readings in the order they were taken. The tool scans forward looking for the first reading that begins a run of consecutive values, three by default, each of which is at least the required amount above the highest of the six readings immediately before the run. When it finds one, it reports the position in the series and the corresponding cycle day, and splits the series into a pre-shift and post-shift phase so the two averages can be compared.

When no run satisfies the rule, it says so plainly and still shows the range of the series. A chart with no detectable shift is a real and common result, and it is information rather than an error.

The threshold and the run length are both editable, because charting conventions differ between sources and between the apps people use. The defaults are the published ones.

The Formula / How It's Calculated

The rule this page implements is the one usually attributed to Barrett and Marshall and described in the literature as the three-over-six rule. As stated in a 2022 paper in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology comparing sensor methods with existing basal body temperature algorithms, ovulation is taken to have occurred if in any window in the cycle there is a sustained rise in temperature over three consecutive days which is at least 0.3 °C higher than the previous six consecutive days.

Formally: for each candidate position i from the seventh reading onwards, take M = the maximum of readings i−6 to i−1, and accept i if readings i, i+1 and i+2 are all at least M + 0.3 °C. The first accepted position is the shift.

Work the default series through by hand. The first twelve readings run between 36.35 and 36.44 °C. At reading 13 the six preceding values are 36.39, 36.41, 36.37, 36.43, 36.40 and 36.38, so M = 36.43 and the bar is 36.73. Readings 13, 14 and 15 are 36.75, 36.78 and 36.75, all above it, so the rule is first satisfied at reading 13. No earlier position works, because every candidate before it faces a bar around 36.74 against readings in the 36.3s.

Splitting there, the mean of readings 1 to 12 is 36.394 °C and the mean of readings 13 to 20 is 36.778 °C, a step of 0.383 °C. That two-level appearance is what charting refers to as a biphasic pattern.

Why Retrospective Is the Whole Point

The temperature rise is caused by progesterone, and progesterone rises after the follicle has released the egg. The shift therefore appears once ovulation is over, and by convention charting places ovulation shortly before the first high reading rather than on it. This calculator reports where the rule is satisfied and leaves that inference to the reader, because the exact relationship between the shift and the moment of ovulation varies and is not something a rule applied to twenty numbers can pin down.

The practical consequence is the one that matters. A chart cannot tell you that ovulation is about to happen. By the time three consecutive high readings exist, at least two days have passed since the shift began. Anyone trying to use temperature alone to time something in advance is using the wrong instrument.

What a chart can reasonably do is show, cycle after cycle, whether a biphasic pattern appears at all and roughly where. Over several months that is a genuinely useful record to take to a clinician, and it is the reason charting persists despite the limitation.

How This Differs From Our Cycle Date Tools

Three adjacent tools on this site work from dates rather than measurements, and the distinction is worth being precise about. This page uses none of that. It takes no dates, makes no projection, and knows nothing about your cycle length. It reads measurements you took and reports where a published rule is satisfied in them. The two families answer different questions: those tools estimate ahead from a pattern, this one describes what already happened in one series.

They also fail differently. A date-based estimate is wrong when a cycle varies from its usual length. A temperature series is wrong when the readings are noisy, and it produces nothing at all when no clear shift occurs.

What Makes a Chart Unreadable

Basal temperature differences are small — a few tenths of a degree — and almost anything can move a reading by that much. A disturbed night, a late waking, alcohol the evening before, an infection, a warmer room, a different thermometer, or taking the reading orally one day and another way the next will all show up. Because the rule compares three readings against a six-day maximum, a single spuriously high day in the baseline raises the bar and can hide a real shift, while three spurious highs in a row can create a false one.

That is why the protocol advice is strict: same time each morning, before getting up or drinking anything, after a reasonable stretch of sleep, same thermometer, same site. A thermometer reading to two decimal places is more useful than one reading to one, because a rule with a 0.3-degree threshold has very little room in it.

When a Chart Shows Nothing

Some cycles produce no shift that meets the rule. Sometimes the readings are too noisy. Sometimes the run is too short — the rule needs at least six baseline readings plus the run itself, so a series of eight numbers cannot satisfy it however it behaves. And sometimes there was no ovulation in that cycle, which happens in normal cycles from time to time and more often in some conditions.

A calculator cannot distinguish between those three cases, and this one does not try. It reports that the rule was not satisfied and shows the range of the data so you can see whether there is any structure in it at all.

Repeated cycles without a detectable shift, cycles that vary widely in length, or difficulty conceiving over a sustained period are all reasons to talk to a clinician rather than to keep charting. A chart is a useful thing to bring to that appointment; it is not a substitute for it. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using a chart as contraception. Temperature confirms ovulation after the fact. It identifies no safe days, and fertility awareness used to avoid pregnancy requires training from a healthcare professional and several indicators together.
  • Expecting a prediction. The shift appears after ovulation. No temperature series can tell you that ovulation is coming.
  • Taking readings at inconsistent times. A late waking or a disturbed night moves a reading by more than the threshold the rule uses.
  • Mixing measurement sites or thermometers. Oral, vaginal and other sites are not interchangeable, and switching mid-series introduces a step that is not physiological.
  • Reading a single cycle as a conclusion. A cycle without a detectable shift is common and has several possible explanations that a chart cannot separate.
