Visa sponsorship, laboratory safety and responsible conduct of research training are handled at appointment.
What a search committee reads first
The first pass is done by a committee working to a long calendar rather than by one reader working to a deadline. They are checking field fit, teaching record and, depending on the institution, publication or grant record. A file that does not make the discipline and the level obvious on page one gets read against the wrong post.
Evidence of teaching and scholarship
Give courses by name and level, the enrolment you taught, and what students did as a result — pass rates, retention, capstone or placement outcomes. Where research is part of the post, list output with the venue and your position in the author order rather than a count, and give grant amounts alongside your role on the award. Committees are reading for what you can be handed in your first semester.
The opening, and stating your field and level
Open with your discipline, your terminal degree and its status, and the courses you are qualified to teach, because those decide which post you can be considered for at all. Research-intensive and teaching-intensive institutions want the same facts in a different order, so lead with whichever the posting leads with.

- Sending a resume rather than a CV, so the publication list and technical detail the hiring PI needs never appear
- Describing your doctoral work in thesis chapters instead of in the methods and questions the advertised project uses
- Listing every co-authored paper without indicating your contribution, which makes a strong record read as ambiguous

A community college post and a research university post can list the same duties and mean entirely different jobs.
