Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

What this field is judging behind the words

Senior front-end loops normally include a system-design round adapted to the browser: rendering strategy, caching, state ownership, bundle budgets. Take-home exercises remain more common here than in backend hiring, though a growing number of teams replace them with a live session on your own code. Expect a design partner in at least one interview, because senior front end is judged partly on how you negotiate with them.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost senior front-end developer candidates

• Presenting a senior page that is still a feature list, when the level is judged on architecture and adoption
• Quoting Lighthouse scores with no field data, which experienced reviewers discount immediately
• Skipping the collaboration story - senior front end is largely negotiating with design, backend and product

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

No certification carries weight. Open-source maintainership and conference talks function as the informal credential. The IAAP accessibility specialist qualification is the single exception, and only for roles where compliance is an explicit requirement rather than a preference. Public sector and large regulated employers do occasionally list it, and in those cases it is checked rather than skimmed, so it is worth holding if that is the market you work in.

Where this leads if you get it

Senior front end leads toward staff-level web platform work, design-system ownership, or a move into engineering management. Specialising in performance or accessibility is a reliable way to be hired for judgement rather than framework familiarity.
