The result I would point to first is that I reframed a churn-prediction request as a price-elasticity problem after showing churn scores would not change any available action. Day to day my work centres on Python, Causal inference and Forecasting, which maps directly onto what this role calls for. I have attached my resume, which sets out the rest in the same terms.

Adapting this for a senior data scientist application
Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible
Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" β it spends a sentence saying nothing.
Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number
Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.
What this field is judging behind the words
Senior loops lean on past-project deep dives where an interviewer probes your assumptions until something breaks, plus a business-framing round with a non-technical stakeholder. Coding rounds still appear but are rarely the deciding factor. Many teams now explicitly test whether you will push back on a badly specified request, because senior scientists who only execute are cheap to replace and expensive to misdirect.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real β a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into β and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
Mistakes that cost senior data scientist candidates
- Presenting a portfolio of notebooks when the level is judged on models that ran, degraded and were maintained
- Quoting offline metrics only, with no business outcome and no mention of how the model behaved live
- Avoiding the failures, which removes the only material that distinguishes senior judgement from mid-level execution
Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.
What this role needs on paper
No certification is relevant. Doctorates remain common at senior level in research-adjacent teams and are largely irrelevant in product teams. Publications, talks and a written case study of a project you stopped all function better as credentials than any qualification. Interviewers at this level are trying to establish judgement, and judgement is only visible in narrative, so anything that lets you tell a complete story about a decision is worth more than a line in an education section.
