Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

What this field is judging behind the words

Product analytics interviews are case-heavy. Expect a live product-sense discussion where you are handed a hypothetical metric drop and asked how you would investigate it, plus a statistics round on experiment design that catches candidates who have run tests without understanding power. The take-home, where it exists, is usually a real event dataset rather than a modelling exercise.

Mistakes that cost product data analyst candidates

• Reporting dashboards built rather than decisions changed, which is the whole point of the role
• Quoting uplift from tests with no mention of significance, sample size or duration
• Treating the tracking plan as someone else's job, when owning it is the strongest signal in this specialisation

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

No certification matters. Amplitude and Mixpanel offer product credentials that are occasionally mentioned in postings but rarely influence decisions. What functions as evidence is a written experiment readout you can share, which shows both the analysis and how you communicated an uncomfortable result. Statistics coursework is quietly useful here in a way it is not for general analytics roles, because experiment interviews go further into power and variance than most candidates expect.

The path runs analyst to senior, then commonly into analytics leadership, product management, or growth. Product analysts move into product management more often than any other analyst specialisation because the decision proximity is already there.
