Paragraph one: licence, tickets and availability

Name the role, then your licence class and current certifications, then when you can start. A contractor reading this is checking whether you are legally able to do the work and whether you are free. Everything else can wait for paragraph two.

Paragraph two: the work, at scale, done safely

Give one job you can describe concretely: what it was, how big, how long it took and how it went. Add your safety record if it is good. Contractors are buying reliability and competence, and a specific job is more persuasive than any adjective.

What this field is judging behind the words

Superintendents hire foremen on control. They want crew sizes you have run, scopes you took from layout to punch, and how you keep a three-week look-ahead honest rather than optimistic. Safety leadership is examined closely, because the foreman owns the crew's incident record and the pre-task planning that prevents it. Expect questions about a schedule slipping and what you actually did about it.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, the type of work the company takes on, or its safety record — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost construction foreman candidates

• Listing craft tasks and never the crews, scopes and schedules you were responsible for
• No safety leadership content, when a foreman owns the crew's incident record
• Claiming superintendent-level project control that a foreman does not hold

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

OSHA 30 is the normal expectation for supervisory roles, alongside first aid and competent person training for the hazards on your scope, such as excavation, fall protection or scaffolding. NCCER craft and supervisory credentials are widely recognised in merit shop work. Some owners and jurisdictions add site-specific supervisor training before you can run a crew.
