Day to day my work centres on AWS, Azure and Terraform, which maps directly onto what this role calls for. I have attached my resume, which sets out the rest in the same terms.

Adapting this for a cloud architect application
Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible
Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" β it spends a sentence saying nothing.
Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number
Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.
What this field is judging behind the words
Architecture hiring is interview-heavy and design-led: expect whiteboard sessions on multi-region design, cost modelling, security boundaries and migration sequencing. Stakeholder communication is assessed as seriously as technical depth, because much of the job is persuasion. Resumes that give the size of the estate moved and the resulting cost position are the ones that get to design rounds.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real β a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into β and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
Mistakes that cost cloud architect candidates
- Claiming multi-cloud broadly when depth in one provider is what gets you shortlisted
- Listing associate level certifications only for a role that expects professional or expert tier
- Describing architecture diagrams produced rather than workloads moved and dollars saved
Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

Professional-level cloud architecture certifications are commonly listed and often required by consulting firms and partner organisations. Where a role is with a cloud partner, the certification may be a business requirement rather than a preference.
